Iran's parliament orders ties with Britain reduced (AP)

TEHRAN, Iran ? Iran's parliament on Sunday approved a bill requiring both Iran and Britain to withdraw their respective ambassadors from each other's countries, following London's support of recently upgraded U.S. sanctions on Tehran.

Tehran's relations with Britain have become increasingly strained over the past few months, largely driven by increasing tensions over Tehran's disputed nuclear program. The West says Iran is developing weapons; Tehran denies the claims.

During an open session broadcast live by state radio, 171 out of 196 lawmakers present voted for the bill requiring Iran to reduce its relationship with Britain to the level of charge d'affaires within two weeks. Ismail Kowsari, a lawmaker and one of the sponsors of the bill, told the official IRNA news agency that the bill would lead to the removal of ambassadors.

Britain's Foreign Office on Sunday said the decision to order the country's ambassador, Dominick John Chilcott, to leave Tehran was regrettable.

"This unwarranted move will do nothing to help the regime address their growing isolation, or international concerns about their nuclear program and human rights record," the ministry said in a statement. "If the Iranian government acts on this, we will respond robustly in consultation with our international partners."

The bill needs ratification by a constitutional watchdog to be a law. It also requires reduction of the volume of trade to a "minimum" level. It allows Iran's foreign ministry to restore ambassador-level relations if the "hostile policy" of Britain changes.

Parliament's decision is seen as a reaction to London's support of a new U.S. package of sanctions in Iran. The measures were coordinated with Britain and Canada and build on previous sanctions to target Iran's oil and petrochemical industries and companies involved in nuclear procurement or enrichment activity.

The annual volume of trade between Iran and Britain is about $500 million.

Iranian oil exports are a large component of this trade. In the first six month of 2011, Iran sold some 11,000 barrels of crude to Britain per day, some 0.5 percent of Iran's daily production.

British Midland International airline carries some 80, 000 between Tehran and London per year in its daily flight. Some 100.000 Iranians live in Britain.

The tension between the two countries is not limited to the nuclear dispute.

Earlier in October, the mayor of Tehran ordered a lawsuit to be filed contesting the ownership of the land on which Britain's embassy has stood since the 19th century.

In September, Iran detained and summoned a group of people for their alleged links to BBC's Farsi-language service.

Since the turmoil which followed Iran's 2009 elections, Tehran has repeatedly accused Britain of fomenting unrest. London denies the charge.

Laura Osnes is a shooting star in 'Bonnie & Clyde' (AP)

NEW YORK ? Laura Osnes is still in that pinch-me-I-must-be-dreaming phase.

The 25-year-old actress is now starring in her third Broadway show, and originating a role for the first time, only four years after landing in New York by way of an unlikely vehicle: a reality TV show.

"I think if I had written it out myself, I wouldn't have planned it as good as this. In my wildest dreams, I never would have imagined all of the amazing opportunities that I've had," Osnes says during a break in rehearsals for "Bonnie & Clyde," which has music by Frank Wildhorn.

Thanks to talent and some good luck, Osnes has speedily gone from performing "Grease" in dinner theater in Minneapolis to doing the same musical on Broadway after winning NBC's "Grease: You're the One That I Want" in 2007.

After that, she replaced Kelli O'Hara in "South Pacific" and got the chance to sing and dance alongside her hero Sutton Foster in "Anything Goes." Now her two-and-a-half-year investment in bank robber Bonnie is about to pay off.

"This is my first originating role so it's just been so exciting to be part of this process pretty much from the ground up," she says. "It was kind of magical how the whole thing happened."

Osnes initially auditioned for an earlier Wildhorn musical ? "Wonderland," an updated telling of "Alice in Wonderland." She lost the lead role of Alice to Janet Dacal but Wildhorn, the composer of such Broadway shows as "Jekyll & Hyde" and "The Scarlet Pimpernel," was impressed.

"He said, `I think you're too young for Alice, but I'm working on this other musical that I think you might actually be really great for. It's a new musical about Bonnie and Clyde.'"

It turned out that even in defeat, Osnes had dodged a bullet: "Wonderland" was savaged by critics by the time it arrived on Broadway, and Osnes realizes that some people will be leery of Wildhorn's new work.

"If people come in skeptical, fine by us. Because we'll blow you away," she says. "It's Frank's best work ever. I'm a big fan of his and I love singing every song. I never get sick of them. I've been singing the songs for three years and it's still magic."

Osnes has been with "Bonnie & Clyde" from the very beginning, playing Bonnie as it matured during monthlong stints at the La Jolla Playhouse in southern California in the fall of 2009 and then at the Asolo Repertory Theatre in Sarasota, Fla., a year later.

In between those two stretches, she was tempted by another offer. She was in the final running for a spot in "Bring It On: The Musical," a show loosely based on the popular 2000 movie about competing high school cheerleading teams that starred Kirsten Dunst, Gabrielle Union and Eliza Dushku, and produced a couple of sequels.

Osnes had to choose ? gun-toting Bonnie or a pom-pom wielding cheerleader? A proven brand name or an original musical? Which was worthier of her investment in time? And which had the best shot of being a success or making it to Broadway?

"I just have learned in this business that you really have to follow your heart. That's what I did," she says, pointing to the "Bonnie & Clyde" script. "My heart was attached already to the people and the project."

Christopher Ashley, the artistic director of the La Jolla Playhouse and who directed the Broadway shows "Memphis" and "Xanadu," is glad Osnes stuck with Bonnie. She even worked with the creative team to deepen the character.

"This is the first role I think that really stretches what she can do as a dramatic actress and really explores the darker parts of the human soul. She's really extraordinary in it," says Ashley. "I'm really proud of her because I think it's a true bravura acting role."

The musical, which co-stars Jeremy Jordan as Clyde, explores both the intense love the two lead characters share, as well as their obsession with fame. The song titles reveal as much ? "Made in America," "This World Will Remember Us" and "Dyin' Ain't So Bad."

It wasn't so long ago that Osnes, from the Minneapolis suburb of Eagan, was playing Sandy Dumbrowski in "Grease" in a Minnesota dinner theater. When she found out a Broadway role was the prize of a national TV talent search, she signed up.

After winning and making her New York debut as Sandy, Osnes says she faced some resistance. "There was a stigma," she says. But while rival actresses may have resented her, casting directors knew who she was. "I'm still very thankful that I did the reality show because it put me on the map and it opened a lot of doors for me," she says.

Osnes moved to New York as a newlywed with her husband, Nathan Johnson, an actor-turned-photographer whom she met while the two were understudying Aladdin and Jasmine in production of "Aladdin" at The Children's Theatre Company of Minneapolis. One night, the leads collided during the performance ? Osnes recalls lots of blood and a chipped tooth ? and she and Johnson went on together as replacements. On stage, they shared their first kiss.

After "Grease," Osnes replaced O'Hara in "South Pacific," which she says helped legitimize her after her unorthodox Broadway arrival. And then she won the role of Hope Harcourt opposite Foster's Reno Sweeney in "Anything Goes." That was pure bliss: Long before "Grease," Osnes had come to New York and seen Foster in "Little Women" and "Thoroughly Modern Millie."

She says it was surreal listening to Foster sing during the first day of rehearsal for "Anything Goes."

"I'm thinking, `That's the voice! That's the voice that I've listened to and idolized for the last 10 years of my life!'" she says. "She was always my Broadway hero. Those are the type of roles I want to play. That's the type of voice I want to have."

Now she's living her own Broadway dream. Osnes is having so much fun that she and her co-star are cooking up a sequel to their current show.

"Jeremy and I have joked about doing `Bonnie and Clyde 2: On the High Seas,'" she says with a smile. "Then we could be pirates instead of cowboys."

1st Artificial Windpipe Made With Stem Cells Seems Successful (HealthDay)

WEDNESDAY, Nov. 23 (HealthDay News) -- A 36-year-old husband and father of two children with an inoperable tumor in his trachea (windpipe) has received the world's first artificial trachea made with stem cells.

A report published online Nov. 23 in The Lancet described the transplant surgery, which was performed in June at the Karolinska University Hospital in Stockholm, Sweden.

Without the transplant, the authors of the report explained, the man from Reykjavik, Iceland would have died. A golf ball-sized tumor on his trachea had begun to restrict his breathing. In a 12-hour procedure, doctors completely removed the affected area of his trachea and replaced it with an artificial one.

The artificial trachea was custom-made using three-dimensional imaging. First, a glass model was built to help shape an artificial scaffold. Stem cells were then inserted into the scaffold to create a functioning airway, the authors explained in a journal news release.

The scientists said their technique is an improvement over other methods because they used the patient's own cells to create the airway so there is no risk of rejection and the patient does not have to take immunosuppressive drugs.

In addition, they noted, because the trachea was custom-made it would be an ideal fit for the patient's body size and shape, and would eliminate the need to remain on a waiting list for a human donor.

"The patient has been doing great for the last four months and has been able to live a normal life. After arriving in Iceland at the start of July, he was one month in hospital and another month in a rehabilitation center," a co-author of the study and the physician who referred the patient for the procedure, Tomas Gudbjartsson, of Landspitali University Hospital and University of Iceland, Reykjavik, said in the news release.

The transplant team has since performed another transplant on a second patient from Maryland with cancer of the airway. This patient's bioartificial scaffold, however, was made from nanofibers. They now hope to treat a 13-month-old South Korean infant also using this method.

"We will continue to improve the regenerative medicine approaches for transplanting the windpipe and extend it to the lungs, heart and esophagus. And investigate whether cell therapy could be applied to irreversible diseases of the major airways and lungs," said Gudbjartsson.

Although the technique shows promise, Dr. Harald C. Ott and Dr. Douglas J. Mathisen, from Massachusetts General Hospital and Harvard Medical School in Boston, cautioned that more research must to be done to fully evaluate its safety and effectiveness.

"To be adjudged successful, bioartificial organs must function over a long time -- short-term clinical function is an important achievement, but is only one measure of success. Choice of ideal scaffold material, optimum cell source, well-defined tissue culture conditions, and perioperative management pose several questions to be answered before the line to broader clinical application of any bioartificial graft can be crossed safely and confidently," Ott and Mathisen concluded in the news release.

Italy's borrowing rates skyrocket, Monti scrambles (AP)

MILAN ? Italy's borrowing rates skyrocketed during bond auctions Friday, temporarily battering stock markets in Europe as the continent's escalating debt crisis laid siege to the eurozone's third-largest economy.

Italy's new government under economist Mario Monti faces a battle to convince investors it has a strategy to cut down the country's euro1.9 trillion ($2.6 trillion) debt. The auction results are also likely to fuel calls for the European Central Bank to use more firepower to cool down a rapidly escalating debt crisis.

Driving market fears is the knowledge that Italy is too big for Europe to bail out, like it has done with smaller nations Greece, Portugal and Ireland. Italy must refinance $200 billion by next April alone, but too-high borrowing rates can fuel a potentially devastating debt spiral that could bankrupt the country.

Friday's auctions showed that investors see Italian debt as increasingly risky. The country had to pay an average yield of 7.814 percent to raise euro2 billion ($2.7 billion) in two-year bills ? sharply higher than the 4.628 percent it paid in the previous auction in October. And even raising euro8 billion ($10.7 billion) for six months proved exorbitantly expensive, as the yield for that spiked to 6.504 percent, nearly double the 3.535 percent rate last month.

Following the grim auction news, Italy's borrowing rates in the markets shot higher, with the ten-year yield spiking 0.34 percentage point to 7.30 percent ? above the 7 percent threshold that forced other nations into bailouts.

Markets so far appeared to be giving Monti no honeymoon since he took power a week ago.

"Mario Monti has failed so far to impress bond markets he has the power and authority to do what is required," said Louise Cooper, markets analyst at BGC Partners.

Solid returns on Wall Street then helped European markets recover from earlier losses Friday.

Italy was not the only member of the 17-nation eurozone to have a disappointing auction this week. Even Germany ? the region's strongest economy and the main funder of eurozone bailouts ? suffered a shock Wednesday when it failed to raise all the money it sought, its worst auction result in decades. Spain also saw its borrowing rates ratchet sharply higher even after a landslide victory for the conservative Popular Party, which has made getting Spain's borrowing levels down its top priority.

Contagion over Europe's debt crisis also hit Hungary and Belgium. Moody's downgraded Hungary's sovereign debt to junk status, a decision that government hotly criticized. Hungary is not a member of the eurozone, but trades with many eurozone members. And the Standard & Poor's ratings agency downgraded long-term Belgian debt on Friday, citing a threat to its exports.

Monti emphasized his intention to balance Italy's budget by 2013 and to introduce "fair but incisive" structural reforms," his office said following a Cabinet meeting Friday.

Monti also has pledged to reform the pension system, re-impose a tax on homes annulled by Berlusconi's government, reduce tax evasion, streamline civil court proceedings, get more women and youths into the work force and cut political costs.

Olli Rehn, the EU's monetary chief, told reporters Italy's economic fundamentals were "solid" and praised Monti's economic reforms as "going in the right direction" but said more action was needed.

Monti's medicine ? budget rigor and growth measures while fairly distributing the social pain ? are "the right ones," Rehn said after meeting in Rome with the Italian leader. "I fully endorse them."

Rehn told Italian lawmakers they must implement the measures quickly.

"Over the longer term, productivity will depend on a well-educated labor force," Rehn said. "I am particularly concerned about high unemployment, which is a tremendous waste of talent that Europe simply cannot afford."

This week's developments have ratcheted up the pressure on the European Central Bank to step up its bond purchases in the markets, though Germany remains adamantly opposed. The current program is designed to support bond prices in the markets, thereby keeping a lid on the borrowing rates.

So far, the ECB has been buying limited amounts of bonds and has to sell an equivalent amount of assets. The ECB said Monday it bought bonds worth only euro4.5 billion ($6 billion) last week, down from euro9.5 billion ($12.7 billion) a week earlier.

Potentially, the ECB has unlimited financial firepower through its ability to print money and many countries in the eurozone, including France, want the bank to act more decisively to solve the debt crisis.

However, Germany finds the idea of monetizing debts unappealing, warning that it lets more profligate countries off the hook for their bad practices.

UK's Ministry of Defence loses a ton of tech (Digital Trends)

From time to time, employees lose company laptops, accidentally leaving them in a bar or on a train. USB sticks go missing too, slipping out of pockets or sliding down the back of sofas, never to be seen again. And of course, some equipment gets stolen.

Workers at the UK?s Ministry of Defence, however, appear to be a particularly lax bunch, having lost possession of 287 computers, 72 hard disks, 73 USB sticks, 28 mobile phones and 194 CDs and DVDs in the last 18 months alone.

If this happened in any government department it would be bad enough, but the fact that it?s the Ministry of Defence, which of course deals with highly sensitive information, is sure to raise eyebrows among the British public.

The UK???s under-secretary of state for defence Andrew Robathan said that in Germany 21 laptops were stolen in a single incident. Another 20 laptops went missing in another incident but were later recovered.

Radios, 3G cards and cameras have also gone missing since the Conservative-led coalition government took office in 2009.

Robathan tried to calm fears that confidential material on the computers and storage devices could be accessed, saying that all data was encrypted.

In a parliamentary written answer, Robathan said, ?The MoD [Ministry of Defence] takes any loss and theft of communications and information systems and associated media storage devices very seriously. We have robust procedures in place to mitigate against such occurrences and to manage such losses when they do occur.?

He goes on to say that with a global workforce of more than a quarter of a million individuals and with devices being frequently on the move, ???it is almost inevitable that equipment will go missing.??

Despite constant reviews of ?processes, instructions and technological aids? to prevent the losses, it seems the MoD has made little progress in getting on top of the situation ? a report in 2008 said that over a four-year period more than 700 laptops had been lost or stolen at the MoD.

Syria's Assad: crackdown to continue (AP)

BEIRUT ? Syria's President Bashar Assad has vowed to continue with a security crackdown to crush 'militants' who he says are massacring Syrians on daily basis.

Assad said in an interview with Britain's Sunday Times newspaper published Sunday that Syria will not bow and will continue to resist the pressures being imposed on it.

The embattled president said he feels "pain and sorrow" for the bloodshed in Syria but added the solution was to eliminate the militants he blames for much of the violence.

He said 800 Syrian officers and members of the security forces have been killed since the start of the revolt eight months ago.

The U.N. says some 3,500 have been killed in the unrest and the crackdown in Syria since mid-March.

ZINTAN, Libya (AP) ? Libya's new leaders said Sunday they will try Moammar Gadhafi's son at home and not hand him over to the International Criminal Court where he's charged with crimes against humanity. The government also announced the capture of the toppled regime's intelligence minister, who is also wanted by the court.

In one of several emerging complications, however, the former rebel faction that captured Seif al-Islam Gadhafi a day earlier is refusing to deliver him to national authorities in Tripoli, raising concern over whether he will get a proper trial and demonstrating the interim leaders' weak hold over their fractured nation.

In the capital, Information minister Mahmoud Shammam said ex-intelligence minister Abdullah al-Senoussi was captured alive on Sunday by a brigade from a southern region called Fazan, not far from where Gadhafi's son was seized on Saturday while trying to flee to neighboring Niger.

Though they are wanted by the International Criminal Court in the Netherlands, Libya will likely seek to try both men at home.

Speaking before al-Senoussi's capture, Shammam said Seif al-Islam, the ousted Libyan leader's one-time heir apparent, must be tried in Libya, even though the country's new leaders have yet to establish a court system.

"It is only fair for the Libyan people that he is tried here. ... Seif al-Islam committed crimes against the Libyan people," Shammam told The Associated Press.

"The ICC is just a secondary court, and the people of Libya will not allow Seif al-Islam to be tried outside," Shammam said.

Seif al-Islam, who was once the face of reform in Libya and who led his father's drive to emerge from pariah status over the last decade, was captured by fighters from the small western mountain town of Zintan who had tracked him to the desert in the south of the country.

He was then flown to Zintan, 85 miles (150 kilometers) southwest of Tripoli, where he remains in a secret location. The faction of rebel fighters from the western mountains formed one of the key forces against Gadhafi's regime during the six-month civil war.

Even after Gadhafi's fall in August and after his capture and killing in October, Libya's numerous and sometime competing rebel factions have refused to disarm, raising fears of new violence and instability.

"We have priority over Seif al-Islam ? we caught him, and we were the forefront leaders in this revolution," said Tahir al-Turki, head of the small town's local council, explaining why he would not be sent to the capital.

"He will be safer with us in Zintan. We don't know who will take him or deal with him in Tripoli," he said.

That position shows how powerful regional factions backed by bands of armed fighters are able to act autonomously, even on issues of the highest national interest.

Shammam, the information minister, played down suggestions that a power struggle was brewing over the high-value prisoner or that the position of local officials was undermining the authority of the national leadership.

He said the national leadership had no objection to keeping Seif al-Islam in Zintan until a trial can be organized, but that the small town was not capable of organizing and holding the trial itself.

"If you catch a criminal in Texas, you're not going to bring him to Washington, are you?" Shammam told the AP.

Authorities in the National Transitional Council would also likely face challenges in organizing a trial.

Libya, under the elder Gadhafi's 42-year rule, had intentionally weak state institutions and a government that barely existed. Gadhafi, who held no title, had ultimate authority and did not want the development of any other power centers that might challenge him.

As a result, a capable court system, like other state bodies, must be built from scratch.

The International Criminal Court prosecutor Luis Moreno Ocampo told the AP Saturday that he will travel to Libya on Monday for talks with the NTC on where the trial will take place.

Ocampo said that while national governments have the first right to try their own citizens for war crimes, his primary goal was to ensure Seif al-Islam has a fair trial.

International human rights groups have called for Seif al-Islam to be quickly sent to the court in The Hague, Netherlands, citing the apparent killings in custody of his father and brother Muatassim on Oct. 20 as "particular cause for concern."

The two were captured alive last month by another strong regional group, the Misrata fighters, who also took part in the march on Tripoli that toppled the regime.

By the end of the day they were seized on, they both ended up dead while still in the hands of Misrata fighters in circumstances that have yet to be explained. The Misrata fighters held onto their corpses and displayed them as trophies for days in a commercial refrigerator in their city, where people lined up to view the decomposing bodies.

Authorities there refused to hand the bodies over to national officials and buried them in a secret location.

Libya expert George Joffe of Cambridge University said the decision to keep Seif al-Islam in Zintan and possibly try him in that town shows that the NTC has a tenuous hold over the country.

"You are looking at an organization that has never been able to establish itself properly in the country," Joffe said. "There is a degree of chaos and it is not clear that the NTC can grab control of it."

Meanwhile, new details emerged about Seif al-Islam's capture in which fighters swarmed a two-car convoy in the south of the country that some officials said was on its way to neighboring Niger. The car carrying him got stuck in the sand while trying to escape.

Al-Ajami al-Etery, who led the operation, said Seif al-Islam tried to hide his features by throwing sand on his face when he stepped out of his car.

"He said his name was Abdel-Salam and he pretended to be a shepherd, but we found him out and arrested him," he told the AP.

Lady Gaga has never been shy about her feelings for the LGBT community — she's perhaps the biggest and most A-list advocate for LGBT youth. Now her work with the community is earning her some recognition.

At this year's annual Trevor Live event, the singer will be honored by the Trevor Project, a nonprofit organization that offers suicide-prevention services to lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender youth. Gaga will receive the Trevor Hero Award, Press Party reports. The organization will also recognize Google Inc. with the Trevor 2020 Award.

"Our young people are at the center of a health crisis, and vocal leaders like Lady Gaga and technology leaders like Google Inc. have stepped up to help change our culture," David McFarland, interim executive director and CEO of the Trevor Project, said in a statement.

"Our honorees are working with the Trevor Project to make a better today and a brighter tomorrow for youth. We are proud to honor Lady Gaga with the Trevor Hero Award and Google Inc. with the Trevor 2020 award for their work to help young people express their true selves with pride."

Gaga and her mother recently started the Born This Way Foundation, which will focus on "youth empowerment and equality by addressing issues like self-confidence, well-being, anti-bullying, mentoring and career development and will utilize digital mobilization as one of the means to create positive change."

The Trevor party is set to go down on December 4 at the Hollywood Palladium. Gaga won't be the only A-lister on hand at the big show.

Fergie, Mary J. Blige, Miley Cyrus, Gleeks Chris Colfer and Darren Criss, Julianne Hough and "True Blood" star Joe Manganiello are just a few of the stars slated to appear. Criss made headlines last year when he was joined onstage by Katy Perry at the event. The two performed her track "Teenage Dream," which he had famously covered on "Glee."

Brewer to turn spent grains into energy

Alaskan Brewing Co.

Alaskan Brewing Co. received a nearly half-million dollar grant to install a steam boiler fired entirely by spent grain.

By John Roach

The U.S. government is giving a nearly half-million dollar grant to a beer maker in Alaska that aims to install a first-of-its-kind boiler that is fueled entirely by spent grain.

All brewers are confronted with mountains of spent grains ? mostly barley. Many get rid of the waste by routing it to farmers for animal feed, a noble service that can help grow a steak to accompany your fine ale.

For the Alaskan Brewing Co. in Juneau, this has involved an added step, since the closest market for its grains is a long-distance, boat-ride away in Seattle.

To keep the grains from decomposing during transport, the brewery first dries them in a machine that is heated by a biomass burner that uses about 50 percent of the spent grain as a fuel source.

Now, with the help of the $458,000 grant from the U.S. Department of Agriculture's Rural Energy for America program, the brewery is installing a machine that will use the dried grain to power a biomass steam boiler.

"The new boiler will eliminate the brewery's use of oil in the grain drying process and displace more than half of the fuel needed to create process steam," the company said in an emailed statement.

Brewers use process team, for example, to boil the sugary water called wort, created when sugars are extracted from the grains, a key step in brewing beer.

The boiler will cut the brewery's overall energy use from oil, and corresponding carbon emissions, by more than 70 percent, according to Alaskan Brewing Co.

The system also eliminates?the need to ship the grain south to cattle around Seattle, Ashley Johnston, a company spokeswoman, told me.

The grant is one of eight announced Thursday by the agriculture department, all of which are aimed at helping rural businesses to lower energy costs so that they can stay competitive and, potentially, hire more workers.

In total, 52 projects received over $31 million in grants and loan note guarantees through the program this year. The grants can finance up to 25 percent of a project's cost.

NCBI ROFL: Nintendo Wii video-gaming ability predicts ...

?BACKGROUND: Studies using conventional consoles have suggested a possible link between video-gaming and laparoscopic skill. The authors hypothesized that the Nintendo Wii, with its motion-sensing interface, would provide a better model for laparoscopic tasks. This study investigated the relationship between Nintendo Wii skill, prior gaming experience, and laparoscopic skill. METHODS: In this study, 20 participants who had minimal experience with either laparoscopic surgery or Nintendo Wii performed three tasks on a Webcam-based laparoscopic simulator and were assessed on three games on the Wii. The participants completed a questionnaire assessing prior gaming experience. RESULTS: The score for each of the three Wii games correlated positively with the laparoscopic score (r = 0.78, 0.63, 0.77; P < 0.001), as did the combined Wii score (r = 0.82; P < 0.001). The participants in the top tertile of Wii performance scored 60.3% higher on the laparoscopic tasks than those in the bottom tertile (P < 0.01). Partial correlation analysis with control for the effect of prior gaming experience showed a significant positive correlation between the Wii score and the laparoscopic score (r = 0.713; P < 0.001). Prior gaming experience also correlated positively with the laparoscopic score (r = 0.578; P < 0.01), but no significant difference in the laparoscopic score was observed when the participants in the top tertile of experience were compared with those in the bottom tertile (P = 0.26). CONCLUSIONS: The study findings suggest a skill overlap between the Nintendo Wii and basic laparoscopic tasks. Surgical candidates with advanced Nintendo Wii ability may possess higher baseline laparoscopic ability.?

Bonus quote (description of Figure 1, above):
?For task 3, a shoelace knotted at one end and 25 Polo Nestle Co Ltd (Croydon, UK) mints were placed in the working area. The participants were given 10 min to thread as many mints as possible onto the shoelace using two grasper tools. The score was the number of mints added to the shoelace at the end of the task.?

Kermit the Frog talks reuniting for 'The Muppets' (AP)

UNIVERSAL CITY, Calif. ? It's not easy being green ? or staging a comeback.

That's exactly what Kermit the Frog and his pals are attempting with "The Muppets," their first big-screen foray since "Muppets in Space" orbited theaters in 1999. In their newest adventure, set for release Nov. 23, Kermit's felt-covered entourage reunite with the help of humans Gary and Mary (Jason Segel and Amy Adams), as well as a new muppet named Walter.

During a break from shooting last January on the same Universal Studios soundstage where the original "Phantom of the Opera" was filmed in 1924, Kermit (with some assistance from veteran puppeteer Steve Whitmire) discussed returning to Hollywood from the swamp, dating Miss Piggy and crushing on "Parks and Recreation" actress Rashida Jones.

___

AP: What's it been like working with the gang on this film? It feels like it's been a long time since we've seen you.

Kermit: It's been like 10 or 12 years. It's a good reason for the gang to get back together. Fozzie was actually hibernating, and we had to pull him out because it's winter time. There were lots of logistics like that we had to deal with before filming, like getting all kinds of permits for farm animals, you know, because that's what a lot of us are.

AP: Where does this film find Kermit the Frog in life?

Kermit: It finds me in a rather unusual place. I'm like Hugh Hefner in frog skin. In real life, I'm a very simple frog. When I'm not working, I just go back to the swamp. In this movie, I'm still playing Kermit the Frog, oddly, but it's like another version of me. I wanted to stretch myself dramatically. It's about time I got taken seriously in Hollywood.

AP: This stage was first used in "Phantom of the Opera" and is reportedly haunted. Any spookiness during filming?

Kermit: Yeah, this isn't actually the real Muppet Theater. It looked enough like where we did the real "Muppet Show" that we thought it would make a good set. Things do happen. One day, I got locked in my dressing room for hours. I don't think that was a ghost though. I think that had something to do with Miss Piggy not wanting me to come out at that moment.

AP: What is the relationship status with you and Miss Piggy these days?

Kermit: Piggy and I keep in touch. We do have a relationship of sorts. It's just not that whole married thing. We never actually got married. There's been confusion about that. Maybe you can clear that up when you write this story. I'm a bachelor. I'm still playing the field. It's always great getting back with Piggy. She can be a little dramatic at times.

AP: You have several celebrities providing cameos in the film. Who has been your favorite?

Kermit: Well, we had Mickey Rooney of all people. He did a small piece, and so did Alan Arkin. These are guys that we would've worked with in the early days of "The Muppet Show," but I must say there's a special place in my little froggy heart for Rashida Jones. If you get a good look at her, you'll understand why. Don't tell Miss Piggy I said that though.

How to Prepare Your Hand-Me-Down iPhone 4 [IPhone]

How to Prepare Your Hand-Me-Down iPhone 4Congratulations on your upgrade to an iPhone 4S! What are you going to do with your old iPhone 4? If you're like me, you want to give it to a spouse, partner, child or friend, because they've got an older, lousier phone. But is it possible? Doesn't the iPhone 4 have a weird micro-SIM? Here's how.

First, let's wipe your old phone. We're going to assume that you've already backed up your phone and transferred the data to your new iPhone 4S. If not, do that first in iTunes by right clicking on your iPhone icon in the left column and hitting Back Up.

The easiest way to erase the phone of all your data and personal info is to go to the Settings app on the phone itself. Then go to General -> Reset (all the way at the bottom) -> Erase All Content and Settings. Then tap Erase iPhone to confirm. This takes a few minutes to a few hours, depending on the state of your phone.

If your recipient is upgrading from an old iPhone, make sure to back up that phone as well, so you can restore it later. You can do this while you're waiting for your iPhone 4 to wipe. Multitask!

Verizon Users

Luckily for you, Verizon users have it extremely easy, because they don't have any SIM cards to deal with. All you need to do is activate the phone on thew recipient's account, and you can do it either on the phone or online. Here's what Verizon recommends.

When you are ready, please dial *228 and SEND from the iPhone and press option 1 to activate. Then follow the prompts to complete the activation.

You can also make this change online. Below I have provided you with the steps:

  1. Sign in to My Verizon Express at http://www.vzw.com.
  2. Under the Device column, select Activate a Device.
  3. Select which device to change, if a multi-line account.
  4. Enter the ESN/MEID of the new device in the appropriate field.
  5. Select Next. The Review Your Changes screen displays.
  6. Select Next. The Plan Feature Changes Required screen displays if any current features are incompatible with the new device.
  7. Select Continue.
  8. Select the features for the new device by selecting the drop down arrows to view the options.
  9. Select Next. The Review Your Changes screen displays.
  10. Select Submit.

Note: The customer must dial *228/option 1 to complete the activation.??

AT&T Users

Because the iPhone 4 is the only phone on AT&T to use a micro-SIM, your recipient is almost certainly using a phone with a regular SIM. What you need to do is to shrink down a regular SIM to a micro-SIM.

I used this micro SIM cutter, which worked fantastic on the first try. (Good, because you only get one try.)

To eject the micro-SIM tray, just use a very thin paper clip, or a sewing needle, and push down into the micro-SIM ejector hole. You'll need to use a little bit of force, but not so much that you're trying to punish your phone.

Now, take your regular-sized SIM and slot it into the cutter, then take the original micro-SIM from your iPhone 4 and visually line the two up. You want to adjust the SIM in the cutter so that there is enough margin on all four sides so the metal contact area doesn't push up against the edge. A good guideline is to make it look as similar to your old micro-SIM as possible.

Line the SIM up and clamp the cutter down hard enough so the SIM remains in place and doesn't slide around, but not too hard so you actually start punching out the SIM. Practice what carpenters and mohels preach: Measure twice, cut once. Ensure your SIM is lined up, then push down HARD and FAST to get a clean punch.

All that's left is putting the newly-cut SIM into the micro-SIM slot and inserting it back into the iPhone 4. If you're confused which end is which, the ejection hole faces toward the bottom of the phone (the speaker or Home button).

Then, connect your phone to iTunes to activate, and you're done. If the lucky new owner of your iPhone 4 had an iTunes backup of their own phone, you can restore it by right clicking on the iPhone in the left hand side of iTunes, and clicking Restore From Backup.

That's it! Now both of you have iPhones, and you can iMessage and FaceTime each other until one of you gets bored or annoyed.

Turning a micro-SIM back into a SIM

If you ever want to use that micro-SIM in a normal phone (like an Android phone, for example) that takes a regular SIM, you'll need to use an adapter. The micro-SIM cutter we recommended above comes with two micro-SIM adapters in order to use that micro-SIM in a normal, non-iPhone 4 phone. They're "good enough" but not great. You can get this adapter for $1, which has better reviews.

NASA's Chandra helps describe the birth of a black hole

Friday, November 18, 2011

New details about the birth of a famous black hole that took place millions of years ago have been uncovered, thanks to a team of scientists who used data from NASA's Chandra X-ray Observatory as well as from radio, optical and other X-ray telescopes.

Over three decades ago, Stephen Hawking placed -- and eventually lost ? a bet against the existence of a black hole in Cygnus X-1. Today, astronomers are confident the Cygnus X-1 system contains a black hole, and with these latest studies they have remarkably precise values of its mass, spin, and distance from Earth. With these key pieces of information, the history of the black hole has been reconstructed.

"This new information gives us strong clues about how the black hole was born, what it weighed and how fast it was spinning," said author Mark Reid of the Harvard-Smithsonian Center for Astrophysics (CfA) in Cambridge, Mass. "This is exciting because not much is known about the birth of black holes."

Reid led one of three papers -- all appearing in the November 10th issue of The Astrophysical Journal -- describing these new results on Cygnus X-1. The other papers were led by Jerome Orosz from San Diego State University and Lijun Gou, also from CfA.

Cygnus X-1 is a so-called stellar-mass black hole, a class of black holes that comes from the collapse of a massive star. The black hole is in close orbit with a massive, blue companion star.

Using X-ray data from Chandra, the Rossi X-ray Timing Explorer, and the Advanced Satellite for Cosmology and Astrophysics, a team of scientists was able to determine the spin of Cygnus X-1 with unprecedented accuracy, showing that the black hole is spinning at very close to its maximum rate. Its event horizon -- the point of no return for material falling towards a black hole -- is spinning around more than 800 times a second.

An independent study that compared the evolutionary history of the companion star with theoretical models indicates that the black hole was born some 6 million years ago. In this relatively short time (in astronomical terms), the black hole could not have pulled in enough gas to ramp up its spin very much. The implication is that Cygnus X-1 was likely born spinning very quickly.

Using optical observations of the companion star and its motion around its unseen companion, the team made the most precise determination ever for the mass of Cygnus X-1, of 14.8 times the mass of the Sun. It was likely to have been almost this massive at birth, because of lack of time for it to grow appreciably.

"We now know that Cygnus X-1 is one of the most massive stellar black holes in the Galaxy," said Orosz. "And, it's spinning as fast as any black hole we've ever seen."

Knowledge of the mass, spin and charge gives a complete description of a black hole, according to the so-called "No Hair" theorem. This theory postulates that all other information aside from these parameters is lost for eternity behind the event horizon. The charge for an astronomical black hole is expected to be almost zero, so only the mass and spin are needed.

"It is amazing to me that we have a complete description of this asteroid-sized object that is thousands of light years away," said Gou. "This means astronomers have a more complete understanding of this black hole than any other in our Galaxy."

The team also announced that they have made the most accurate distance estimate yet of Cygnus X-1 using the National Radio Observatory's Very Long Baseline Array (VLBA). The new distance is about 6,070 light years from Earth. This accurate distance was a crucial ingredient for making the precise mass and spin determinations.

The radio observations also measured the motion of Cygnus X-1 through space, and this was combined with its measured velocity to give the three-dimensional velocity and position of the black hole.

This work showed that Cygnus X-1 is moving very slowly with respect to the Milky Way, implying it did not receive a large "kick" at birth. This supports an earlier conjecture that Cygnus X-1 was not born in a supernova, but instead may have resulted from the dark collapse of a progenitor star without an explosion. The progenitor of Cygnus X-1 was likely an extremely massive star, which initially had a mass greater than about 100 times the sun before losing it in a vigorous stellar wind.

In 1974, soon after Cygnus X-1 became a good candidate for a black hole, Stephen Hawking placed a bet with fellow astrophysicist Kip Thorne, a professor of theoretical physics at the California Institute of Technology, that Cygnus X-1 did not contain a black hole. This was treated as an insurance policy by Hawking, who had done a lot of work on black holes and general relativity.

By 1990, however, much more work on Cygnus X-1 had strengthened the evidence for it being a black hole. With the help of family, nurses, and friends, Hawking broke into Thorne's office, found the framed bet, and conceded.

"For forty years, Cygnus X-1 has been the iconic example of a black hole. However, despite Hawking's concession, I have never been completely convinced that it really does contain a black hole -- until now," said Thorne. "The data and modeling described in these three papers at last provide a completely definitive description of this binary system."
