Patricia Urquiola's Packing Checklist - Carry On | Travel + Leisure

?

Patricia Urquiola

The architect and designer opens her (well-edited) suitcase.

?The less I pack, the more relaxed I feel,? says the Spanish-born, Milan-based designer, known for her punchy Modernist style in hotels from Puerto Rico (W Retreat & Spa ? Vieques Island) to Barcelona (Mandarin Oriental). ?I?ve lost my luggage several times, so I only take a carry-on??usually a well-worn Globe-Trotter cabin bag with leather trim (price upon request) and a roomy C?line tote (from $2,400). Whether she is traveling to Berlin (where she is working on the Das Stue hotel), Istanbul, or S?o Paulo, Brazil, Urquiola chooses a simple look that can be dressed up or down. One fail-safe outfit: a vintage Marni jacket, V-neck sweater from Cos ($87), and slightly faded Acne jeans ($250). Accessories include comfortable Robert Clergerie brogues ($495) and a Rolex Air-King watch. ?Telling time using my cell phone just isn?t as reliable.?

What?s in Her Bag:

?A reversible silk and wool scarf by Pierre-Louis Mascia is great for converting day to evening wear, and doubles as a wrap.?

?I pack Prada heels and jewelry in case I need to make a quick change in the taxi for a work party.?

?Before getting off the plane, I apply YSL?s lash-lengthening Volume Effet Faux Cils mascara and Chanel Teint Innocence face powder. They?re my armor.?

Apple has no interest in gaming console | GamesGreed.com Blog

Apple will not launch a gaming system soon, company CEO Tim Prepare said during an All Things D occurrence Thursday. The recently hired top professional at the Cupertino, California-based technological innovation massive was obvious and immediate in sending his organization?s dreams.

?I?m not considering being in the system company in what is thought of as conventional game playing,? he said.
Though Prepare said ?no? to the possibilities of immediately competitive with Manufacturers, Ms, and Panasonic, he described game playing is a main issue with Apple?s company.

?I perspective that we are in game playing now in a pretty big way,? he said. ?One of the reasons individuals buy an iPod contact is game playing. Some buy it for songs. Gaming has kind of progressed a bit. More individuals play on convenient gadgets. Where we might go later on, we?ll see. Clients love video games.?

This follows a review from last 30 days that mentioned Apple company was preparing its own TV set for later this season that would come included with a devoted system. This system would allegedly depend on movement and contact manages, possibly through a touchscreen technological innovation distant that would come included with the TV.

While there may not be a Apple company system soon, Prepare taunted that a upcoming version of Apple company TV may integrate game playing, saying ?I think it could be exciting,? and not elaborating further. This is not the first time Apple company TV has been linked with video games. Last season, a review recommended that value found inside new try out firmware indicated to the organization providing game playing to the video system.

Minn. to test Obama influence on gay marriage

(AP) ? Voters in Minnesota will test the political impact of President Barack Obama's support for gay marriage this fall, when they decide whether to ban gay marriage in the state Constitution.

Opponents hope the president's enduring popularity in Minnesota will persuade skeptical Democrats to vote for gay rights. In all, four states either have or are likely to have statewide votes on gay marriage in November, and all four are states Obama won convincingly four years ago.

Minnesota's measure is the most severe, and would toughen existing limits on gay rights. Those working to defeat it hope enough voters follow the president's self-described evolution on gay marriage.

Obama is visiting Minnesota on Friday to tout his jobs initiatives and hold a fundraiser in Minneapolis.

Next week's Wisconsin recall: a test drive of themes for Election 2012

Wisconsin recall election between Gov. Scott Walker (R) and Tom Barrett (D) enters its last furious week. It is a proving ground for the themes and players of the national election in November, analysts say.

For a preview of the November presidential election, look no further than the dogfight over the governorship of Wisconsin as it heads to a tooth-and-claw climax June 5.

The recall election of Gov. Scott Walker stems from Wisconsin's own political history in the 16 months since voters here gave him and fellow Republican lawmakers a lock on the statehouse ? and carte blanche to set a sort of "austerity plan" for the state. But the themes ? and the flood of money from outside interests ? that define this gubernatorial election mirror those of the 2012 presidential race so closely that many political analysts see the Wisconsin contest as a test drive for the national general election five months hence.

In both contests there's the dominant issue of jobs ? and which candidate has the better recipe for creating more of them. There's the matter of government overspending and how best to rein it in. And there's the debate over whether government's primary role is to protect struggling middle-class workers from exploitation or, rather, to get out of the way of enterprising capitalists so that the virtuous cycle of wealth accumulation, reinvestment, and economic expansion can proceed unimpeded.

The alliances are similar, too. In Governor Walker's corner, as in presumptive GOP presidential nominee Mitt Romney's, are conservative "super political-action committees" and wealthy business interests driven by a renewed determination to slash government, cut taxes, reduce regulation, and, not least of all, clip the political and economic power of labor unions.

In challenger Tom Barrett's corner, as in President Obama's, are Big Labor and, the Democrats hope, a large share of the "99 percent" who believe the wealthy don't pay enough taxes, want government to safeguard the environment and the needy, and see investment in the health and education of most of the populace as a benefit, not a drain.

"Walker is seen as standing for a more aggressive brand of conservatism at the state level," says William Galston, a senior fellow at the Brookings Institution's Governance Studies Program in Washington. If recall voters in Wisconsin elect to keep him, "then that will say something pretty significant about the mood of the people and their receptivity to the core messages of the two political parties."

The outcome in Wisconsin is expected to be a psychological boost to the winning side heading into November, especially because this is a fickle swing state. Wisconsin voted big for Mr. Obama in 2008, then shifted its allegiance to the Republicans and Walker, rejecting longtime US Sen. Russell Feingold (D) for good measure.

"The Wisconsin election is unquestionably the second most important election in the United States in 2012" next to November, says Nelson Lichtenstein, a labor history expert at the University of California, Santa Barbara.

(AP) ? The jury in John Edwards campaign finance corruption trial has started its eighth day of deliberations.

The jurors were scheduled to work an extra 30 minutes on Wednesday and Thursday, unless they finish first. The judge in the trial said the jury will leave early on Friday to accommodate jurors' family commitments that include attending high school graduations.

The former presidential candidate faces six charges involving nearly $1 million provided by two wealthy donors to help hide his pregnant mistress as he sought the White House in 2008.

The judge met behind closed doors Tuesday with attorneys to talk about a problem with a juror, but it's still not clear what was discussed.

I Am Married, Can I Get A Loan Using Only My Credit ... - Realtor.com

questions

Q: I?m newly married and my husband has less than perfect credit but my credit is above a 660. i currently work at a credit union and we are looking to get a home within the next year and I wanted to know if you think that would be possible? If they only will let me get the home loan in my name will they consider both of our income because he makes way more than I do and he has been at his job for more than 4 years? Thanks.
?Anonymous, Appleton, WI

A: You should absolutely be able to qualify for a home based on the limited information you gave me. You should get pre-qualified by a bank or credit union where you work to find out how much you qualify for and how much of a down payment you would need. If you need a great referral for a real estate agent in your area, let me know.
Monique Higginson is Realtor? with Market Source Real Estate in Salt Lake City, UT.

A: Make an appointment with a loan officer and ask him to do a pre-qualification for the purchase of you house. I am sure you will get a realistic answer.
Mercedes Solano is a Realtor? with Amer Ex Realty Inc. in Bellflower, CA.

A: Hi, Although you work for a credit union, there may be a bank or lending company that has the ability to help you. The only people that can tell you if it is possible is a loan officer. I wouldn?t give up on the first one. I know many people who get turned down but didn?t talk to a really good loan officer and could have closed on a home. The alternative is to seek out a way to increase your husband?s credit. Depending on what is on his credit and what type of loans he will qualify for will differentiate between banks.
Suzanne White is a Realtor? with McBride Kelly & Associates in Tampa, FL.

A: You need to speak with a lender not a Realtor?. You say you work at a credit union and that would be the place to start since they know you.
Kathryn Copeland is a Realtor? with Coldwell Banker Residential Real Estate in Winter Park, FL.

A: I suggest speaking with a local agent in your market, and getting a referral to a good lender. Of course, since you work for the credit union, you may want to speak with one of your loan officers there. The only real problem with credit unions typically is their lack of flexibility with loan programs.
David Welch is a Realtor? with RE/MAX 200 Realty in Winter Park, FL.

Tolkien's Advice About Relationships: Writing Real Romance ...

J.R.R. Tolkien and his wife Edith.

J.R.R. Tolkien had three sons and one daughter, and in a letter to his son Michael he discusses his views on women?s issues, marriage and the truth about men in relationships. ?In this letter written in March 1941, Tolkien is very explicit, and very wise on the subject.

As a writer, we can glean from his ideas the truth about relationships and challenge ourselves to write romantic stories that are more realistic and much more complex in nature.

1. ?Chivalry is Fantasy ? Tolkien writes: ?There is in our Western culture the romantic chivalric tradition still strong, though as a product of Christendom (yet by no means the same as Christian ethics) the times are inimical to it. ?It idealizes ?love? ? and as far as it goes can be very good, since it takes in far more than physical pleasure, and enjoins if not purity, at least fidelity, and so self-denial, ?service?, courtesy, honor, and courage? This is, of course, false and at best make-believe? (p. 48-49). ?Tolkien believes that this type of love is best kept to the fantasy of fiction and is not possible in the real world. ?It works great to make lovers swoon, and it is nice to dream about it, but he says that chivalric love makes a man forget a woman?s desires by placing her on a pedestal, idealizing her until she is not real. ??It takes, or at any rate has in the past taken, the young man?s eye off women as they are, as companions in shipwreck not guiding stars? (p. 49). ?It is the idealized woman on the cover of Cosmo who is airbrushed until she is a Barbie doll. ?Lately, as in the case of the?Twilight novels, this ideal is reversed so that the female places the male on the pedestal. ?Edward is the perfect guy who does not exist. ?Tolkien says that what this does is ?make young folk look for a ?love? that will keep them always nice and warm in a cold world, without any effort of theirs; and the incurably romantic go on looking even in the squalor of the divorce courts? (p. 49). ?It can only lead to disaster. ?Should our fiction teach our young the truth or lead them down a path of fantasy that destroys any hope of a true relationship in the future? ?I say tell the truth.

2. ?Observations About Women ? Tolkien writes: ?The sexual impulse makes women (naturally when unspoiled more unselfish) very sympathetic and understanding, or especially desirous of being so (or seeming so), and very ready to enter into all the interests, as far as they can, from ties to religion, of the young man they are attracted to? Under this impulse they can in fact often achieve very remarkable insight and understanding, even of things otherwise outside their natural range; for it is their gift to be receptive, stimulated, fertilized (in many other matters than the physical) by the male?It is their natural avenue to love? (p. 49). ?According to Tolkien, women are unique from men in that they have the innate ability to love regardless of the situation or how many times they have been hurt by the one they love. ?They are more forgiving than men in this regard, and it is in their nature to not strike back and that women only do so because the men in their lives have warped this natural nature. ?He says that ?women who are flighty, or even plain wanton ? I don?t refer to mere flirtatiousness, the sparring practice for the real combat, but to women who are too silly to take even love seriously, or are actually so depraved as to enjoy ?conquests?, or even enjoy the giving of pain ? but these are abnormalities, even though false teaching, bad upbringing, and corrupt fashions may encourage them? (p. 50). ?He does not blame the woman for her ?unnatural? behavior, but her surroundings. ?Women naturally love.

3. ?Tolkien as Feminist ? The most interesting thing he has to say about women is this: ?A young woman, even one ?economically independent? as they say now (it usually really means economic subservience to male commercial employers instead of to a father or a family), begins to think of the ?bottom drawer? and dream of a home, almost at once. ?If she really falls in love, the shipwreck may end on the rocks. ?Anyway, women are much less romantic and much more practical? They do not want a guiding star. ?They may idealize a plain young man into a hero; but they do not really need any such glamour either to fall in love or remain in it. ?It they have any delusion it is that they can ?reform? men? (p. 50). ?The first idea is feminist in that it shows that he sees women who are successful in the business world as still working in a patriarchal society according to the roles that men have defined for them. ?He seems to use a disdainful tone toward women?s roles being defined by the men in a male dominated society.

4. ?Observations About Men ? Tolkien writes: ?No man, however truly he loved his betrothed as bride as a young man, has lived faithful to her as a wife in mind and body without deliberate conscious exercise of the?will, without self-denial? When the glamour wears off, or merely works a bit thin, they think they have made a mistake, and that the real soul-mate is still to find. ?The real soul-mate too often proves to be the next sexually attractive person that comes along? (p. 51). ?Men are driven by one thing (and we all know what that is) and it is a struggle for a man to stay with one woman his entire life. ?I can say that from experience it is the love for my wife as a person that has kept me with her these 14 years. ?I suppose there is a little of the chivalric within me, but the reason I stay faithful to my wife and fight the natural desire of looking at other women is because she and I have formed not just a relationship of lovers but a relationship along the nature of what a best friend would be. ?It is no wonder that so many marriages end in divorce. ?Men are naturally prone to wander. ?Tolkien continues: ?Only a?very wise man at the?end of his life could make a sound judgement concerning whom, amongst the total possible chances, he ought most profitably have married! ?Nearly all marriages, even happy ones, are mistakes; in the sense that almost certainly (in a more perfect world, or even with a little more care in this very imperfect one) both partners might have found more suitable mates. ?But the ?real soul-mate? is the one you are actually married to? (p. 51). ?Men need to realize that the person they married is indeed someone who is perfect for them if the reasons they married them are pure and not merely sexual. ?The problem with marriage today is that people do not marry their best friend, but their best sex partner. ?If we all married our best friend, our marriages would work out much better.

5. ?Real Relationships Hurt ? There is an element of risk in any relationship, but our society has put padding on all things that could hurt us, and so we automatically think that our relationships should be the same. ?Tolkien writes: ??the truly great and splendid in this fallen world is more nearly achieved by ?failure? and suffering? (p. 52). ?We have as our guides only ?prudence, wisdom (rare in youth, too late in age), a clean heart, and fidelity of?will? (p. 52). ?I cannot count the times that my wife and I have had difficult moments in our relationship of 15 years. ?We always manage to work it out. ?If our relationship was purely sexual, it would have died out a long time ago. ?I love my wife because she loves me and cares deeply about me. ?I love my wife because she is at the core my best friend on this earth. ?The things that have been struggles for us have indeed made us stronger. ?We do not hold grudges, do not let the sun go down until we have made up, and try our best to forgive one another when we fall down.

What this means for writers:? Good relationships in fiction, relationships that will make readers want to read on, are relationships that understand the true nature of men and women, sprinkled with an element of romance (enough to make it interesting yet not unrealistic) and will have an aspect of pain and discomfort that will be that much more wonderful when those in the relationship figure out how to make it work, how to forgive one another, and how to work together. ?If we steer ourselves away from the desire as writers to please our audiences with nonsense fantasy relationships in favor of what is really necessary in the real world for these connections to work, we will not only be telling the truth, but we will be doing our world a service as well.

Not only should you have a great product to offer, you also want to have a plan set in stone of how to market it in the best way possible. You will find that doing this is going to build a reputation for the product, as well as bring in a nice profit for you. The best thing you can do for your business is perfect your product launch. The products you offer are the foundation of your business, and they are what your audience will judge you by. That?s one reason it costs so much to launch a product to the world. The costs shouldn?t matter to you if you do everything you need to do in order to launch your product because you will have the opportunity to make that money back tenfold. This article is intended to give you a better understanding of what goes on with a product launch, and what you should do to make it a successful event.

One of the techniques that many online marketers take advantage of is to have a small/mini launch before going for the big one. This private launch will allow you to see how the different elements of your launch will work before they big day hits. This is usually accomplished best by mailing a select group of your subscribers. If you don?t get a favorable response, then you need to work on your product some more and see where it needs to be tweaked before the launch.

Another thing to consider when launching your new product is to make sure that you choose the correct time to watch it. You may not have thought about this but not each day of the week will be the same for the launch of your product. For instance, if your target market involves working individuals, the best day to launch the product would be on Friday or Saturday as it would be the weekend. As long as you keep in mind the audience and their needs, this should be easy to choose. The more you know about your target market, the better you?d be able to select a proper day for it.

When you are trying to think of a great offer that will draw customers in, be sure to consider why it is that they will want to be buying your product in the first place. This is critical because people won?t be buying your product for its features, but for its advantages. If you have already figured out what all of the benefits are, you will be able to market to your market better because you know what you have to offer.

You will definitely spend a lot of time on your product launch, and you will most likely get frustrated from time to time, but don?t give up. You launch day may lead you to amazing financial gains that will keep pouring in for many years in the future.

Survivor pulled from Italy quake rubble after 12 hours

AP / Luca Bruno

People stand in front of a collapsed building in Cavezzo, northern Italy, on Wednesday.

By msnbc.com news services

A 65-year-old woman was pulled out alive after lying for 12 hours in the rubble?of her kitchen in an Italian town hit by Tuesday's deadly earthquake.?

Firefighters told Sky TG24 TV that a piece of furniture, which had toppled over during the 5.8 magnitude quake that left 16 dead and 14,000 people homeless in the Emilia Romagna region north of Bologna, saved the woman from being crushed by the wreckage. She was taken to a hospital for treatment Wednesday.

The building in the town of Cavezzo?had been damaged in a first quake, on May 20, and had been vacant since. The woman had just gone back inside it Tuesday morning to retrieve some clothes when the latest temblor knocked down the building, firefighters said.?

By late Tuesday, the death toll throughout the region stood at 16, with one person missing: a worker at the machinery factory in the small town of San Felice Sul Panaro. Some 350 people also were injured.

A 5.8 tremor destroyed a number of buildings and killed at least 15 people. NBC's Jim Maceda reports.

Originally government officials had put the death toll at 17, and there was no immediate explanation for the lowered toll.

Factories, barns and churches fell, dealing a second blow to a region where thousands remained homeless from the May 20 temblor, much stronger in intensity, at 6.0 magnitude.

At least 16 die as 5.8-magnitude earthquake hits Italy

The two quakes struck one of the most productive regions in Italy at a particularly crucial moment, as the country faces enormous pressure to grow its economy to stave off the continent's debt crisis. Italy's economic growth has been stagnant for at least a decade, and the national economy is forecast to contract by 1.2 percent this year.

?The area encompassing the cities of Modena, Mantua and Bologna is prized for its super car production, churning out Ferraris, Maseratis and Lamborghinis; its world-famous Parmesan cheese, and less well-known but critical to the economy: machinery companies.

?After the second earthquake, Italy's Prime Minister Mario Monti pledged that the government would do everything possible to restore normal life to the area, which he said was "so important, so productive for Italy,"?the BBC reported.

Government troops had been deployed to the quake-struck areas, and a cabinet meeting would planned for later on Wednesday, according to the BBC.?

An 6.0 earthquake caused a violent tremor in Italy on Sunday, destroying historic buildings, including a cathedral. NBC's Stephanie Gosk reports.

The country's main business association warned on Wednesday that the?earthquakes would have a prolonged impact on the region.

"The earthquakes in May, which had very serious effects on people's lives, will also have prolonged consequences for some of the most important industrial regions in Italy and for an area with strong manufacturing activity," business lobby Confindustria said in an economic report.

"This can only worsen an already very difficult situation," it said.?

Reuters and The Associated Press contributed to this report.?

Can Egypt's voters force candidates to compromise?

Khaled Elfiqi / EPA

The upcoming election showdown between Islamist Muslim Brotherhood stalwart Mohammed Morsi (L) and former Mubarak-era minister and military loyalist Ahmed Shafiq has been described as a "worst-case scenario" by analysts across the political spectrum. Is that a correct assessment?

By Ayman Mohyeldin , NBC News

ANALYSIS

CAIRO -- Former Mubarak-era minister and military loyalist Ahmed Shafiq and Islamist candidate and Muslim Brotherhood stalwart Mohammed Morsi will run against each other in Egypt?s upcoming presidential run-off election, officials announced on Monday.

Out of a field of five serious contenders who ranged from moderates to Islamists to secularists, the showdown between these two has already been described as a ?worst-case scenario? by analysts across the political spectrum.

Some analysts are already calling for voters to boycott the run-off elections scheduled for the middle of June, the argument being that by withholding their vote Egyptians can delegitimize the process that led to this outcome. Also, the argument goes, by boycotting the vote a citizen can deny the winning candidate a strong mandate to govern.

Other commentators are simply reducing the run-off vote to a choice between security, which is Shafiq?s mantra, and the imposition of Islamic law, Morsi?s pledge. ?

So is Egypt facing a depressing return to the Mubarak-era or a drastic plunge into the sharia law-era?

Not necessarily either of these scenarios.?

The results of the election, and the upcoming run-off, can be interpreted much less pessimistically.? Instead of the bleak assessments being peddled now, Egypt may instead be entering an era where compromise, coalition-building and power-sharing are part of the political lexicon.

Runoff could take Egypt's voters on one of two very different paths

There are a few facts that need to be considered when analyzing the recent vote.

Fact one: The majority of voters who went to the polls did not want Morsi or Shafiq to be president. The figures indicate Morsi garnered 24.4 percent and?Shafiq?23.3 percent. The rest of the candidates split the remaining 52.3 percent of the vote.

Simply put, more people wanted someone else to be president than they wanted either one of these two candidates.

Fact two: By garnering almost as many votes as the Muslim Brotherhood's candidate, Shafiq and the grassroots organization he built and mobilized over a few months has become a major cause of concern for the long-standing political force.?

Egypt's next president to be an Islamist or Mubarak's former premier?

Fact three: A majority of Egyptians have grown weary of Islamist politicians in an very short period of time. ?In fact, the majority voted for either staunchly secular candidates, Shafiq, Amr Moussa and Hamdeen Sabahi, or Aboul Fotoh, a moderate Islamist who promised not to mix religion and politics and also enjoyed the support of idealist secular youth.

In essence, this election has proved that while the Muslim Brotherhood may be the dominant force on Egypt?s streets, that doesn?t mean they are the most popular political force.

Voters lined up in Cairo to choose from five leading candidates: a socialist, two Islamists, and two with ties to former President Hosni Mubarak. NBC's Richard Engel reports.

While they are still considered the best-organized and funded political organization in Egypt, the recent results probably rattled the Muslim Brotherhood?s cage while helping them understand that they need coalitions too. In other words, the election results prove that there are forces capable of competing against the Muslim Brotherhood.

For 16 months, a debate has raged over the country?s political future.? Should it be a presidential or parliamentary system? Should it be an Islamist state? Secular? Capitalist? Socialist? The candidates tried to define themselves assuming these were the metrics the voters used.

But the results of the first round of voting showed that Egyptians en masse have yet to answer a central question about the country?s future: Do they accept change and the uncertainty and chaos it brings, or will they choose stability and the stagnation it breeds?

For the past year and four months, everything that has unfolded in this country can be seen through this prism ? a choice between change or stability.

Egypt's next president to be an Islamist or Mubarak's former premier?

From deadly street protests, to military trials, to parliamentary elections -- every time Egypt?s revolutionary movements have tried to shove the country towards radical change, forces just as eager to slow the pace of change have pushed it back from the edge.

NBC's Richard Engel spoke with former President Jimmy Carter to talk about Egypt's elections and the country's future. The Carter Center has been in Egypt monitoring the presidential elections.

So, as people call for change, just as many have overcome their apathy and said "not so fast."

When the change appears to lean in favor of the more powerful Islamist parties, it becomes more palpable for many to slow change down.

And with around 48 percent of voters now behind Morsi or Shafiq, 52 percent are now up for grabs. So what is clear is that for Morsi or Shafiq to win the presidency, they will have to win the hearts and minds of the remaining voters. ?

Now the questions is ? what can the two candidates do to secure this group?s support?

In Egypt's elections, politics is a new family affair

For Morsi, the Muslim Brotherhood candidate, the message from the electorate is clear: The Brotherhood is beatable, Egyptians are tired of the Islamists? meteoric power grab, and want to see the MB reach across the political divide and move to the center. ?Morsi?s Islamist base of support is not enough to win the elections so he must moderate his party?s policies to win the support of cautious and skeptical revolutionaries, many of whom are liberal and likely secular, but nonetheless pro-revolutionary and pro-change.

In contrast, Mubarak?s last prime minister Shafiq,?has tapped into a core of the population who wants stability and is more afraid of Islamist politicians than of a return to Mubarak-era policies and practices.

And Shafiq can?t win the Presidency without recognizing that the new balance of power depends on the young, who are overwhelmingly pro-revolutionary, either as Islamists or secularists.

Watch World News videos on msnbc.com

Shafiq played the fear of uncertainty card well in the first round, but he will have to show voters that he can deliver reforms, change and democracy as well as security and stability. In other words, Shafiq?s core of staunchly secularist and anti-change, pro-stability loyalists are not enough to win the final round of elections.

So the core supporters of these two camps are not enough to win them either an all-out majority, which leaves a central question: Which candidate can overcome his shortcomings better?

Will Shafiq show undecided voters that he will bring reforms, security and democracy? Can Morsi convince voters that the Muslim Brotherhood will commit to a civil secular pluralistic state?

The candidates will have a month to sell themselves to the voters -- and the voters will have a month to decide just how they envision Egypt?s revolution playing out.

Commonly used painkillers may protect against skin cancer -Skin ...

? Skin Cancer news ? May 29, 2012

A new study suggests that aspirin and other similar painkillers may help protect against skin cancer. Published early online in CANCER, a peer-reviewed journal of the American Cancer Society, the findings indicate that skin cancer prevention may be added to the benefits of these commonly used medications.

Previous studies suggest that taking nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, or NSAIDs, which include aspirin, ibuprofen, and naproxen, as well as a variety of other nonprescription and prescription drugs, can decrease an individual?s risk of developing some types of cancer. Sigr?n Alba J?hannesd?ttir, BSc, of Aarhus University Hospital in Denmark, and her colleagues looked to see if the medications might decrease the risk of the three major types of skin cancer: basal cell carcinoma, squamous cell carcinoma, and malignant melanoma.

The researchers analyzed medical records from northern Denmark from 1991 through 2009 and identified 1,974 diagnoses of squamous cell carcinoma, 13,316 diagnoses of basal cell carcinoma, and 3,242 diagnoses of malignant melanoma. They compared information, including prescription data, from these patients with information from 178,655 individuals without skin cancer.?

Individuals who filled more than two prescriptions for NSAIDs had a 15 percent decreased risk for developing squamous cell carcinoma and a 13 percent decreased risk for developing malignant melanoma than those who filled two or fewer prescriptions for the medications, especially when the drugs were taken for seven or more years or taken at high intensity. Individuals who took NSAIDs did not seem to benefit from a reduced risk of developing basal cell carcinoma in general, although they did have a 15 percent and 21 percent reduced risk of developing this type of cancer on less-exposed sites (body areas other than the head and neck) when they took them long term or at high intensity, respectively.

?We hope that the potential cancer-protective effect of NSAIDs will inspire more research on skin cancer prevention,? said Ms. J?hannesd?ttir. ?Also, this potential cancer-protective effect should be taken into account when discussing benefits and harms of NSAID use.?

Still, research has not been unanimous in that finding: one large 2008 report found no link between NSAIDs and melanoma.

The drugs have also been linked to an increased risk of kidney cancer and come with known bleeding risks - so more research is needed to weigh the possible harms and benefits of the drugs outside of pain relief, researchers said.

But the lead author on the new study said it would make sense if NSAIDs were tied to skin cancer risk.

?NSAIDs work by inhibiting specific enzymes involved in inflammation,? Sigrun Alba Johannesdottir, from Aarhus University Hospital, told Reuters Health in an email.

The researchers found that people with a history of using aspirin and other NSAIDs had a 13 percent lower risk of melanoma compared to non-NSAID users, and a 15 percent lower risk of squamous cell carcinoma, another less-deadly form of skin cancer.

There was no difference in the risk of basal cell carcinoma, a third cancer type, based on whether or not Danes had used NSAIDs, according to findings published Tuesday in Cancer.

When the researchers looked specifically at people who had filled prescriptions for the drugs over at least seven years, and used them twice a week or more, they found a stronger link: long-term, high-intensity NSAID users had a 46 percent lower risk of melanoma, a 35 percent lower risk of squamous cell carcinoma and a 17 percent lower chance of getting basal cell carcinoma.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, close to 60,000 people in the U.S. were diagnosed with melanoma in 2008, the most recent year with available data, and just under 9,000 died from the disease.

About two million people nationwide are diagnosed with non-melanoma skin cancers each year, but only about 5,000 people die from squamous cell and basal cell carcinomas combined.

Aspirin and other NSAIDs can be bought over-the-counter in the U.S. for a few cents per pill.

Wine hoax fools industry elite

Rare-wine collectors are savvy, competitive guys with a taste for impossible finds. The biggest hoax in history took place right under their noses.
Even at Rudy Kurniawan?s coming-out party in September 2003, there were questionable bottles of wine.
A score of Southern California?s biggest grape nuts had gathered at the restaurant Melisse in Santa Monica that Friday for a $4,800-a-head vertical tasting of irresistible rarities provided by Kurniawan: P?trus in a dozen vintages, reaching as far back as 1921, in magnums.
Paul Wasserman, the son of prominent Burgundy importer Becky Wasserman, is something like wine royalty, but before this event, the oldest P?trus he had tasted was from 1975.
Nonetheless, two bottles left him scratching his head. The 1947 lacked the unctuousness of right-bank Bordeaux from that legendary vintage, and the 1961 struck him as ?very young.? He briefly entertained the idea of ?possible fakes???61 P?trus in magnum has fetched up to $28,440 at auction?and jotted, in his notes on the ?47, ?If there?s one bottle I have serious doubts about tonight, this is it.?
But in the rare-wine world, doubts are endemic; murkiness is built into a product that is concealed by tinted glass and banded wooden cases and opaque provenance and the fog of history.
Guests at tastings don?t want to bite the hand that quenches them. Auctioneers may not want to risk losing consignments by nitpicking ambiguous bottles. Winemakers don?t like to talk about counterfeiting, for fear of the taint. Also, one thing not high on the FBI?s list of investigative priorities: billionaires getting snowed by wine forgers.

The Family Factor: Parenting around the binge drinking culture: Are ...

There were about 8 girls at the party and the birthday girl?s mother was one of those parents that wanted to be ?the cool mum?. We got to the party table and it was laden with chocolate, chips, cake, soda drinks and? alcohol. All for us! Yes, the mother purchased and served us alcopops.
The wrestling that went on in my mind, which I thought at the time was mine alone but realise now would have been happening to many of the girls at the party, was mammoth. The pressure was in fact more enormous than I had ever experienced in my teen years, because I did not have only peer pressure to contend with but I had a an adult both condoning and down right encouraging me to drink. I would not just lose face in front of my friends if I said no, but I became afraid of refusing someone that should represent maturity and safety. Comprising all the facets of power imbalance, coercion, corruption and hazardous encouragement, this incident was a form of child abuse. It is for this reason that I welcome?the announcement by the O'Farrell government. Their aim is to make it easier for police to fight the teenage booze culture by seeing adults face a maximum of 12 months' in jail, for supplying alcohol to any minor who is not their own child. I know that the drinking culture is a complex issue, however I welcome any intervention that stops our teens being put at further risk. Of course I know full well that teens can begin drinking for any number of reasons, however this is termed ?at risk? behaviour due to a primary need often underlying said behaviour. We now know that teenagers who have trouble coping with the stressors?of life such as; hormonal changes coupled with being bullied at school, home life struggles or other disruptions are more likely to abuse drugs and alcohol, engage in criminal activity, become sexually promiscuous, self-harm, engage in disordered eating and some may attempt suicide. Many of these behaviours are a form of self- medication as a vehicle for temporary relaxation or ?forgetting,? but research indicates that the earlier people start drinking, the more likely they are to drink heavily, experience cognitive impairment and develop a dependency on alcohol as they move into adulthood. Binge drinking, which is drinking to get drunk, is the most hazardous way of consuming alcohol.? Researchers from the University of California and Stanford University found binge-drink, defined as having four or more drinks for women and five or more for men, showed less activity in several brain regions than teetotal teenagers. Dr Susan Tapert found that these differences in brain activity were linked to worse performance on other measures of attention and working memory ability.? The greatest concern being that the negative effects of excessive drinking lingered long after the buzz from the alcohol was gone. In other words, the risk to cognitive and brain functions is enduring.?? It has also become far more socially acceptable for young women to drink in recent years than it was 20 years ago, which unfortunately puts girls at further risk of harm. What can parents do? 10 tips for parents: A study has found that teens with ?hands on? parents are far less likely to engage in risky behaviours.

The? 'tough love' style of parenting which sees a high level of warmth alongside forms of consistent discipline as proven to be the? most effective parenting style in the education of young people about drugs and alcohol.

  1. Maintain boundaries - A teen without rules is a teen with much stress.?Although teens are no longer small children they are still far from being adults.
  2. Teach problem solving and critical thinking skills without lecturing. Discussing issues that teenagers face gives ?names? to worries or concerns and opens up family communication.
  3. Know where your children are and be involved with their friends parents. (Set up an alliance with other parents (so that you all look out for each others kids)
  4. Agree with your child that to attend a party you will be calling the parents to make sure there is active adult supervision (parents sitting upstairs does not count).
  5. Teens need to explore their own limits and abilities, as well as the boundaries you set, so plan for healthy risk taking activities (abseiling, blue hair, rock climbing)
  6. Agree to a pick up your teen and their friends from parties or be waiting at the front door with a hot chocolate when they get home.
  7. Decide on a code word that your teen can use if things are getting out of hand. This way they can ?save face? in front of peers. (e.g? ?I have a headache.? means ?Come and get me.?
  8. Allow for consequences to be carried out if teens have overstepped the boundaries.
  9. Develop a wide social network so that your teen has many different friends to hang out with. (This takes off the pressure of conforming to a negative peer group)
  10. Actively seek an older mentor for your teen if you are struggling. Someone to listen, play sport or take them for a coffee.

Please seek professional help if behaviour is interfering with day-today functioning. i.e. school work, or relationships having deteriorated significantly? and normal support structures are no longer enough.?

NOTE: I chatted here about teen drinking and risk taking on The Morning Show. Great topic but just need to say, I did not choose the title 'Terrible Teens'. I get to work with teens all the time and I can honestly say that there are many beautiful teens out there that are able to make wise choices and have awesome 'hands on' parents cheering them on.
