Like her TV alter, VanCamp prefers to be a mystery

NEW YORK (AP) ? What a difference a year makes.

This time last year, Emily VanCamp was hoping and praying her ABC series "Revenge" would be a success. It was ? and regularly won its time slot.

Now she's gearing up for the show's second season, premiering Sunday at 9 p.m. EDT.

"I was wondering what was going to happen with the show and, oh gosh, I remember just trying to repress the stress so much," VanCamp said in a recent interview. "You just want to focus on the work and not pay too much attention to all that stuff, but you're putting so much of yourself into it, and the fact that it all paid off and that it did so well has been kind of extraordinary. It's been a crazy year to say the least."

VanCamp plays Emily Thorne, a young woman out to get even for her father's death. She infiltrates a wealthy community in the Hamptons to take down the people who betrayed her family.

Like her character, 26-year-old VanCamp is a private person who prefers to remain a bit of a mystery to the public. She doesn't like to talk about her personal life (although she's rumored to be dating her "Revenge" co-star Josh Bowman) and says she's trying to come to terms with the public's interest in her life now that she has a hit TV show.

"We live in a time where the media is a very difficult thing to navigate because it's everywhere, and I tend to want to be a lot more private with my life," she said. "I've managed to do that for 10 years in this business.

"I've found a really nice balance, but this show is a different scale so ... I'm trying to figure all that out at the moment but ... some of the actors that I admire the most do have an element of intrigue. You don't know everything about them. It's very important to be able to distinguish the actors from the characters they play."

One thing VanCamp is getting used to as a leading lady is being sleep deprived.

"I'm exhausted almost all the time," she said. "I keep saying I'm weirdly preparing myself for motherhood because once you can get ahold of this sleep deprivation thing I think you have a leg up. And I'm definitely sleep deprived."

VanCamp also has adjusted to her high-profile role in "Revenge" by seeing herself as part of an "incredible" cast.

"I think it's really interesting to say 'my show' or 'I'm a lead of it' because it is such a collaborative thing ... but I am definitely there all the time," she laughed.

"I'm excited by challenging myself physically and mentally every day. That's what keeps me going and makes me love what I do so I really can't complain about it." She pauses then says: "I complain sometimes. I'm not gonna lie."

Calif. kids' football team hit with bounty scandal

TUSTIN, Calif. (AP) ? In a pee-wee version of the NFL's bounty scandal, the head coach and league president of an Orange County children's football team have been suspended amid allegations that players were offered up to $50 in cash to knock opponents out of games.

National Pop Warner officials suspended Darren Crawford of the Tustin Pee Wee Red Cobras and Tustin President Pat Galentine until the program can investigate and rule on the allegations, according to the Orange County Register (bit.ly/OsCHwh).

The investigation is expected to take at least several weeks, Pop Warner spokesman Josh Pruce said.

The Cobras, consisting mainly of 10- and 11-year-olds, advanced to the Pop Warner Super Bowl last year and finished the season with a 12-1 record.

A group of parents alleged that during the season, Crawford and a then-assistant coach, Richard Bowman, offered youngsters cash for big hits and to knock targeted opposing players out of playoff games.

One boy left a game because of a mild concussion and another former assistant coach, John Zanelli, claims the player that hit him was rewarded with cash.

Crawford, Bowman and Galentine consistently have denied that any cash incentives were paid.

Pop Warner's Orange Empire Conference commissioner, Bobby Espinosa, said he found no evidence of a bounty program after reviewing allegations from six parents and four players. They alleged that bounties of between $20 and $50 were offered during three playoff games at the end of the 2011 season, the Register reported.

Galentine sent Tustin Pop Warner board members an email Thursday about the suspensions.

"The singular focus of our board continues to be the safety and well-being of our kids and the continued success of TPW," he wrote, urging support for young players who "have been placed in the crossfire of this issue by no choice of their own."

Former Tustin Pop Warner President Mark Gutierrez was named acting president during Galentine's absence.

The NFL suspended four players after concluding they were involved in a pay-for-injury bounty pool that ran for three seasons from 2009-2011 and offered cash rewards for knocking opposing players out of games.

The players were reinstated after they successfully appealed the suspensions. New Orleans Saints Coach Sean Payton was suspended for the season.

Are You Smarter Than a Fifth Grade Teacher?

My career as an Instructional Designer (ID) has been heavily influenced by the field of Curriculum Design and Development. What is curriculum design and how is it different from instructional design? Curriculum design is essentially the practice of designing lessons for students. The term is most commonly used when describing K-12 education. Teachers may cover up to seven different lessons in a day with students. Each of those lessons is an instructional activity to be designed.

While many design concepts are present in both instructional design and curriculum development, they are typically labeled with different vocabulary. For example, the controversial concept of learning styles debated in instructional design might be discussed among the teaching community as multiple intelligences or differentiation of instruction. While many curriculum development concepts have influenced my own ID, there are four primary practices that have inspired me the most: protocols, illustrations, professional learning communities, and artifacts.

Protocols

I was introduced to protocols in my job at the All Kinds of Minds Institute, a non-profit organization dedicated to giving teachers strategies to reach all of the students in their classroom. There, the National School Reform Faculty Protocols served as inspiration for both staff activities and instructor led training. The constructivist-inspired protocols they publish provide instructions for how to facilitate transformative small group activities. ?A protocol consists of agreed upon guidelines for a conversation,? states NSRF (www.nsrfharmony.org). NSRF has published dozens of protocols that deepen thinking, solve problems, push an issue or examine student work. The protocols are tested, and they work.

When I design instructor-led training, I often reference a book called ?The Power of Protocols: An Educator?s Guide to Better Practice?. It contains two dozen protocols. Each protocol includes the purpose, details, steps, facilitation tips and variations. Particular favorite protocols of mine include the ?Rich Text? Protocol, and ?Marvin?s Model?. Protocols are an incredible tool for facilitating social learning conversations.

Illustrations

Dan Roam?s book, ?The Back of the Napkin? tells us that 75% of the sensory part of the brain is dedicated to the sense of sight while the other 25% is shared among smell, touch, taste and hearing. Biologically, we are all visual learners. K-12 teachers ask students to draw on a regular basis to develop critical thinking skills. A group that we?re currently working with?Thinking Maps, Inc., based in Cary, NC, has been training teachers for many years on how to use eight core learning maps with students. In this model, students draw the various maps, like circle maps, tree maps and flow maps, to help them brainstorm, define, sort, describe, compare and contrast, classify and more. Research on academic achievement shows that illustrating vocabulary terms contributes greatly to comprehension and retention.

When was the last time you asked your employees or customers to draw? Think of some opportunities to incorporate this powerful instructional strategy into your upcoming learning initiatives.

Professional Learning Communities (PLCs)

Professional learning communities are small groups of teachers and administrators who assemble on a regular basis to examine student work and push their own practice. PLCs have also been referred to as ?communities of continuous inquiry and improvement?1. PLCs are ongoing, reflective, collaborative, supportive, and focused on outcomes. Many schools post PLC norms and meeting templates on the Web. Consider implementing professional learning communities to support the transfer of skills into practice following a formal training program.

Artifacts

Corporate America is largely a testing culture. We like to know what each learner scored on an assessment at the end of a course or module. In addition, organizations might have a formal supervisor or mentor observation plan or other operational performance metrics. In the field of education, teachers are asked to produce artifacts from the classroom to show how they are implementing the Common Core Curriculum standards. These could include lesson plans and student work samples. What kind of workplace artifacts could your employees or customers share ? perhaps in a safe small group environment (PLC) ? to demonstrate performance?

There are many fields that can inspire and enhance learning design including gaming, entertainment, and K-12 Curriculum Development. The field of Curriculum Development has many tried and true methodologies including protocols, illustrations, PLCs and artifacts. I look forward to a continued sharing of design best practices.

Goodell: Fans 'deserve better' than distractions

NEW YORK (AP) ? NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell tells fans "you deserve better" than games worked by replacement officials.

In an open letter released by the league Friday, a day after the regular officials returned to the field, Goodell says: "I regret we were not able to secure an agreement sooner in the process and avoid the unfortunate distractions to the game."

The officials were locked out in June with the two sides unable to reach a new collective bargaining agreement. Replacements were used for three weeks to increasing criticism from players, coaches and fans. The dispute reached deafening levels when a missed call cost the Green Bay Packers a win against the Seattle Seahawks on Monday night.

Goodell tells fans the new contract will improve officiating and commends the replacements for their dedication.

Store humiliates Ga. woman for using food stamps

Is a $15 gift card enough to compensate for public humiliation at your local grocery store? According to one Georgia woman, the answer is absolutely not.

Cindy Nerger, 28, who relies on food stamps to feed her family, said she was brought to tears after being embarrassed by a manager at a Kroger store in Warner Robbins, Ga.

"He said, 'Excuse me for working for a living and not relying on food stamps like you,'" Nerger said the manager told her.

The man's comment came after Nerger and two other store employees disagreed over whether her total purchase was eligible for food stamps - the employees had insisted that roughly $10 of her bill was not covered. She said the manager ultimately told the employees to "just give it to her."

After Nerger then stressed that she had been right all along, the man made his "working for a living" remark, she said.

"I turned around and realized how many people heard him and how many saw that happened and I was so embarrassed? I started crying," she said.

In a statement to ABCNews.com, a Kroger spokesman said, "We deeply regret our customer's experience. The comments made were not reflective of our company's policy. We value all of our customers. Please know that we have taken immediate steps to make sure something like this never happens again."

WATCH: Customers React When They See a Woman Heckled for Running Out of Food Stamps in a "What Would You Do?" Scenario

The spokesman did not reply to a follow-up message asking for more information, but a local Georgia television station reported that Kroger had transferred the manager at the center of the controversy to another store.

Nerger said the reason she and her family - she is married with a daughter - must rely on food stamps is because her husband's carpentry business isn't profitable enough to support the family.

Meanwhile, Nerger must devote 12 hours every night to a dialysis treatment to combat her kidney disease, which she's struggled with since the age of 11. She's been on a kidney transplant list for five years and hopes that someday, after a successful transplant, she can become a working member of society. She would like to attend college to major in child psychology.

"There's just so much stigmatism put on people on food stamps. They're just some losers who don't want to work. That isn't the case in every situation," she said.

Nerger's account of her run-in with a Kroger manager went viral after she posted it to her Facebook page, prompting friends to encourage her to post a message to a local television station. The station ended up contacting her and doing a story.

Kroger, meanwhile, responded to a complaint Nerger passed on through the store's national customer service line by apologizing and offering her a $15 gift card. Nerger said she rejected the offer because she doesn't plan on shopping at Kroger again.

What she wants, she said, is an apology directly from the manager, whom she also believes should be demoted from his job and trained how to treat customers properly.

She stopped short of saying the man should lose his job.

"I didn't want anybody to be in the food stamp line with me," she said.

Euro worries spark share selloff, Spanish yields jump

LONDON (Reuters) - Shares fell around the world on Wednesday and the European single currency hit a two-week low as popular opposition within the euro zone to austerity unnerved investors already worried about a weak global growth outlook.

The main focus was on Spain: protesters clashed with police on Tuesday as Madrid prepared to unveil its 2013 budget on Thursday; and the Catalonian government, which oversees the country's biggest regional economy, called a snap election which could jeopardize plans for economic reforms.

A general strike in Greece and signs of dissent among key euro zone officials over new policies to tackle the region's debt crisis were also combining to take the gloss off recent moves by the European Central bank to calm markets.

"Once again, it shows that when the ball is back in the governments' court, I think there's all this room for disappointment," said Tobias Blattner, European economist for Daiwa Capital Markets.

"I think we just see that the governments are not living up to expectations, are not implementing what they promised."

The renewed concerns over the euro zone's ability to tackle its financial crisis have sparked a sharp rise in volatility on equity markets, leading to the worst day since June for the S&P 500 index on Tuesday and subsequent falls across Asia.

As a result the MSCI world equity index <.miwd00000pus> was down 0.7 percent at 332.70 points and had retraced all the gains made after the U.S. Federal Reserve announced a new round of aggressive monetary easing last week.

Adding to the negative sentiment, Philadelphia Fed President Charles Plosser said on Tuesday that the Fed's latest stimulus measures will not do much to boost economic growth or lower unemployment and raises the risk of longer-run inflation.

In Europe, the main blue chip STOXX 50 index <.stoxx50e> was down 1.78 percent, its biggest one-day fall since early August, led by declines in Spanish and Italian markets which were more than two percent lower. <.ibex><.ftmib/>

The FTSEurofirst 300 <.fteu3> had shed 1.1 percent to 1,107.42 points, having risen 0.4 percent on Tuesday. It is still up over eight percent for the September quarter.

SPANISH PAIN

The growing problems facing Spain, exacerbated by uncertainty over when the government might request an international bailout, pushed the euro down 0.4 percent to $1.2848, its lowest level since September 12.

"The Spanish story does seem to be deteriorating. We are seeing Spanish bond yields pushing higher this morning and that's being echoed by a slightly lower euro," said Daragh Maher, currency strategist at HSBC.

Spain's benchmark 10-year bond yields rose 23 basis points to 6.00 percent, while the cost of insuring the debt against a default has also risen sharply.

Spain faces a big week with not only next year's national budget set to be unveiled; also due for release are plans for new structural reforms for the economy and the results of stress tests on the Spanish banking sector.

Madrid faces a difficult task in reducing its budget gap in an economy which the central bank said on Wednesday is still contracting at a "significant rate".

Economically important Catalonia's decision to hold early elections only added the pressure on Spanish Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy, who conceded in an interview with the Wall Street Journal that he would ask for a bailout if the country's borrowing costs remain too high for too long.

"Ahead of these elections, we will have that classical political paralysis. So I think the government in Catalonia will probably not try its hardest to meet the targets," said Daiwa's Blattner said of goals set for reducing public deficits.

"All the targets for the year as a whole for Spain I think are now under threat."

Meanwhile Italian Prime Minister Mario Monti's statement on Tuesday confirming he would not run in an election due next year added to the weakness spilling over from Spain into its bond markets. Italian 10-year bond yields were up 9 basis points to 5.2 percent.

Commodities markets remain focused on the health of the global economy and signs that slowing growth may be putting a brake on demand.

Brent crude oil futures were down 67 cents to $109.75 a barrel, their second drop in three days, and U.S. crude declined 72 cents to $90.65 per barrel.

Three-month copper on the London Metal Exchange was down 0.8 percent at $8,210.50 per metric ton (1.1023 tons), although this followed a gain of more than 1 percent on Tuesday.

"With worries about Europe and Spain in focus this week, and lingering anxiety over China's economic growth, we see the risk of gains in Q3 turning out to be a false dawn," said ANZ Bank's metals analyst Nicholas Trevethan.

Romney says Clinton can 'do a man a lot of good'

(AP) ? Republican White House hopeful Mitt Romney is unlikely to win Bill Clinton's vote, but that doesn't mean he can't soak up a bit of the popular former president's luster.

The two men stood side by side Tuesday as Clinton introduced Romney before the GOP candidate's speech to Clinton's annual global conference in New York. Clinton recalled working with Romney to save AmeriCorps, and praised the former Massachusetts governor's efforts to persuade fellow Republicans to support the national service program.

Romney, taking the podium, returned the compliment.

"If there's one thing we've learned in this election season, by the way, it is that a few words from Bill Clinton can do a man a lot of good," he said, prompting loud laughter and applause from the crowd.

It was a clear nod to Clinton's speech praising President Barack Obama at the Democratic National Convention in Charlotte, N.C., earlier this month, and the slight uptick in the polls that Obama enjoyed soon after.

"All I got to do now is wait a few days for that bounce to happen," Romney quipped.

Such moments of bipartisan levity have been rare in a campaign marked by harsh accusations, heavy-handed rhetoric and relentless attack ads between the presidential campaigns and the outside groups that support them.

Obama's campaign currently is running one such ad against Romney that uses a clip of Clinton's convention speech where the former president says Romney wants to "take us back to the policies that got us into trouble in the first place."

But any resentment was noticeably absent Tuesday as Clinton and Romney appeared chummy, patting each other on the shoulder and chatting onstage after Romney's speech.

"That was good," Clinton told the man hoping to dislodge Clinton's party from the White House.

Before the speech, Romney spoke backstage with Clinton and Clinton's daughter, Chelsea, said Romney spokesman Rick Gorka. He declined to say what they discussed.

Clinton has an outsized influence on the presidential election more than a decade after he left office. Both Obama and Romney have pointed to Clinton's economic leadership as an example for the nation, citing prosperity and a federal budget that was balanced under his leadership.

Clinton is using the full weight of those credentials to boost Obama's bid. In his convention speech, he systematically rebutted Romney's attacks on Obama, accusing the Republican of pushing an economic plan that doesn't add up.

The Obama-Clinton political alliance was back on display a few hours later when the two Democrats shared a handshake and a hug on the same stage where Romney had spoken earlier in the day.

Normal protocol, Clinton said, would require him to simply introduce the president and then be quiet.

"I just want to make one comment. I'm going to finish that speech I started in Charlotte," he said, poking fun at himself over a sermon that at times seemed like it might never end.

Obama, before beginning a wrenching speech about human trafficking, thanked Clinton for the warm introduction.

"Although I have to admit," Obama joked, "I really did like the speech a few weeks ago a little bit better."

Scientists Parse Genes Of Breast Cancer's Four Major Types

Scientists say a new report in the journal Nature provides a big leap in the understanding of how different types of breast cancer differ.

Scientists say a new report in the journal Nature provides a big leap in the understanding of how different types of breast cancer differ.

Scientists have known for a while that breast cancer is really four different diseases, with subtypes among them, an insight that has helped improve treatment for some women.

But experts haven't understood much about how these four types differ. A new report, published online in the journal Nature, provides a big leap in that understanding.

"This paper gives us a level of detailed knowledge of breast cancer that vastly exceeds what was available before," says Matthew Meyerson, one of the paper's 348 authors. The effort is part of The Cancer Genome Atlas network, funded by the National Institutes of Health.

?

Meyerson and his colleagues used a half-dozen different types of analysis to comb through the genes of 825 breast cancer patients.

"We basically studied the genomes of breast cancers from each of these women in comparison to the genomes of the rest of their bodies," Meyerson told Shots.

They found 40 or so key differences in the genes among the four major types of breast cancer. The types are basal-like (also called triple-negative), luminal A, luminal B and HER2-enriched.

All of these differences are potential targets for cleverly designed drugs.

Some of the similarities between breast cancer and other types of cancer may also be important clues. For instance, the researchers found that certain mutations may underlie basal-like breast cancer and ovarian cancer, especially in women who inherit a BRCA-1 or BRCA-2 mutation.

So some think it might be reasonable to try ovarian cancer drugs in breast cancer patients with these genetic markers.

But Meyerson, who's with the Dana Farber Cancer Institute in Boston and the Broad Institute across the river in Cambridge, Mass., cautions that all of this is a long way from the outmoded dream of a silver bullet that would knock out breast cancer ? or any other kind.

"I think in the end, to treat cancer, we're going to be developing a lot of specific silver bullets, but we'll need to use them in combination," he says. "So you'll really need a gold bullet and a silver bullet and a bronze bullet altogether to effectively treat cancers."

Charles Perou of the University of North Carolina, the first author on the paper, says that arsenal is being developed.

"The bad news is that it's complicated. And we have to figure out which bullet is to be used, where and when," he says. "That has to be done in rigorous clinical trials. And that is happening."

But consumer advocates caution that it's going to take a long time to find and test all these different "bullets."

"For me, I have to say, my enthusiasm around this as new and exciting is dampened by the knowledge that it's going to be many, many, many years before we see something that is clinically meaningful for patients," Karuna Jaggar of Breast Cancer Action told Shots. "In the meantime, too many women continue to be diagnosed with the disease."

Fran Visco, president of the National Breast Cancer Coalition, agrees.

"Finding targets, doing ... genomic screening, that's not the end goal," she says. "That is simply a tool, a step on the way to figuring out how to save lives.

"We have to be careful what we celebrate," Visco adds. "And we have to be careful what we consider to be a success. We are nowhere near success."

Perou says he understands their frustration.

"We're all ? including myself ? disappointed in the speed required to make these clinical advances," he says. "It's far easier to make a discovery than it is to translate that discovery into a clinical impact."

Perou thinks "optimistically" that the first impact from this new research could be two to five years away. It might be for the most common type ? luminal breast cancer. That's because, the new paper shows, it has relatively few genetic mutations.

Unexpectedly, the researchers found that virtually all women with luminal-A breast cancers have a mutation in a cell receptor called phosphoinositide 3-kinase. There are already drugs in the works that target PI3-kinases.

Arts and the media ? friends or foes?

Popular artArts and media is a controversial topic for both areas, considering the influence of the latter on culture in general and of course on all means of artistic expression.

Media?s influence on society

The media influence on political, social and cultural life is becoming more pronounced, being visible in all areas. In the last 50 years society has evolved considerably, technology too, and if at first newspapers were the symbol of this area, in time not only that the number of newspapers increased, but also the development of technology has made the information to be spread at a larger rate than the radio, television and internet.

It goes without saying that we live in a society with information as its basis; a society thirsty for information and communication. Even the most mundane activities that we have throughout the day are closely related to the media, from tasks at the work place, to education, health, how we spend our free time and even personal life ? all of which are strongly influenced by the media. If you wonder how is this possible, we offer the following example: the average person wakes up in the early hours of the morning and accompanied by a cup of coffee enjoys the last news in the favorite newspapers either the most serious, or in tabloids or read the news on the Internet, without neglecting the personal email. People who work in offices spend most of the time, according to numerous research, seeking useful information on the Internet or communicating through social networks.

The lifestyle, what we eat and drink, fashion style are also influenced by the media. We choose food according to the ads we see while watching a movie or a TV show, the fashion style according to what the ?stars? are wearing, thus originality is lost in the mists of time.

We also spend all our free time according to the information we find on the Internet, from various magazines, newspapers or through some programs or documentation. Moreover, media also influences the lives of children and adolescents and parents should be aware of this and intervene when necessary.

On the other hand, media influences how a person perceives reality and how they express their ideas. Personal opinions are shaped by the information that bombs at any step. So media influences how we perceive society and the reality in which we live, being often deformed even the views on politics, but also culture ? the media influence on art being of a great heights.

Arts and media

?Arts and Media

Since ancient times people have tried to communicate in various ways and art is one of them. Any means of artistic expression is an effective way to communicate a message, an idea, a mood, emotions and feelings of people able to decipher the artwork itself. If by mid-nineteenth century architecture, sculpture and painting were the main categories of visual arts, the changes in social life (especially industrial revolution) have radically changed the way art and culture are generally perceived. Besides being the primary means of artistic expression, both in the visual arts and in literature, theater and dance have changed, as other artistic actions emerged, which are mostly in the so-called ?media art?.

Like media, art also has an important role for the entire evolution of society, as between these two powerful elements there is a strong cause-effect connection, given that art influences society and society in turn influences the means of artistic expression.

In terms of visual arts, they are undoubtedly influenced by the evolution of technology. Film also became an art in the true sense of the word while being an interesting means of communicating a message.

Pop art can be considered a convincing example to demonstrate the close relationship between art in general and the media, given that this way of artistic expression is closely linked to both the evolution of technology; the latter field uses painting, sculpture and graphic art to promote certain consumer products, messages and ideas. This contemporary art is labeled as kitsch many times.

Contemporary literature is also influenced by the media in some cases depending on the chosen theme, but in most cases depending on the type of literature promoted through the media. Even though the links between literature and media should be close, considering that both literature ? like any other art ? and mediaMedia art have as a main purpose to send a message;? the differences between these two areas are quite large. Some authors and some literary works are more promoted than other and often the literary value of such ?works? is minimal, so true works of art are to be appreciated by specialists or by people with a rich culture.

Besides art itself is influenced by the media, as? mentioned above, the way a person perceives reality is also altered. Thus, media influences not only art but also how it is perceived and, more importantly, valued. Reading or listening to? news about the art itself, various works of art or searching for information on the museum a person wants to visit? are activities that will alter the assessment of the work of art by the viewer.

Therefore, the influence of the media is felt in every area, including art, the culture of a people being thus strongly influenced by the explosion of information which in most cases consumes all our energy.

No. 11 ND beats No. 18 Michigan, 13-6

SOUTH BEND, Ind. (AP) ? This time, Notre Dame made sure Denard Robinson and Michigan had no shot at a last-minute victory.

Manti Te'o had two interceptions as the 11th-ranked Fighting Irish picked off five Michigan passes and backup quarterback Tommy Rees sparked the Notre Dame offense in a 13-6 win over the 18th-ranked Wolverines on Saturday night.

Robinson, who amassed 948 yards of total offense in victories over the Irish past two years, wasn't as effective this time around as the Irish repeatedly forced him into mistakes. He threw four interceptions in the first half, then lost a fumble at the Notre Dame 8-yard line on the first drive of the second half.

The Irish (4-0) are off to their best start since 2002 and took another step in trying to re-establish themselves as a college football power. It was a setback for Michigan (2-2), which lost its eighth straight road game against ranked teams since beating second-ranked Notre Dame 47-21 in 2006.

The victory also ended a streak of three straight games in which Michigan beat the Irish in the final 27 seconds.

Notre Dame ran out the clock after a 31-yard Brendan Gibbons field goal with 3:27 left in the game made it 13-6. Rees, who came in for an ineffective Everett Golson midway through the second quarter, connected with Tyler Eifert on a 38-yard pass down the sideline on a critical third down. Then an eight-yard run by Theo Riddick on third-and-eight with a minute left salted the game away.

But the victory belonged to the Irish defenders, who held an opponent without a touchdown for a second straight week. Many fans at just the second night game in 22 years at Notre Dame Stadium wore leis to show support for Te'o, a Hawaiian whose girlfriend and grandmother recently died. He finished with eight tackles. Bennett Jackson had nine tackles, an interception and a fumble recovery.

Twice, Notre Dame held Michigan without points from the 10-yard line.

After picking off Golson on Notre Dame's first play, Michigan lost 15 yards on the next three plays as Robinson was sacked twice. Gibbons then missed a 43-yard field goal attempt wide right. On first-and-goal late in the first quarter, Michigan running back Vincent Smith was intercepted by Nicky Baratti in the end zone.

Notre Dame scored on a 2-yard quarterback draw by Rees that fooled Michigan, and on 33- and 39-yard field goals by Kyle Brindza.

Rees, who also rallied the Irish to a game-winning field goal against Purdue, was 8-of-11 passing. Despite that, coach Brian Kelly said Golson remains the starter.

Robinson finished the game 13-of-24 passing for 138 yards and also rushed for 90 yards on 26 carries.

Gibbons got Michigan on the board early in the fourth quarter with a 33-yard field goal.

The first half was so full of errors that at one point the two teams combined for eight completions on 20 attempts with six interceptions. Even referee Bill LeMonnier got into the act after a pass by Golson was intercepted by Michigan safety Thomas Gordon in the end zone and the Irish were called for two penalties on the play. The crowd cheered when he mistakenly announced that the play resulted in a touchdown, instead of saying it was a touchback. In the fourth quarter, a play was ruled dead because officials said someone in the stands blew a whistle.

'Homeland' and 'Modern Family' win big at Emmys

The post-Emmy champagne surely tasted sweet for the people at "Modern Family" and "Homeland," but they needed only to look around the Nokia Theatre to see how quickly popular tastes and Hollywood's most unpredictable awards show can change perceptions.

ABC's "Modern Family" continued its run as television's most honored comedy at Sunday's Emmys, winning the best comedy award for the third year in a row, a directing honor for co-creator Steve Levitan and acting trophies for Julie Bowen and Eric Stonestreet. They were already conscious that with such success may come an inevitable backlash.

"I'm praying that everybody doesn't get sick of us," Levitan said backstage. Maybe the Emmys' director did: music swelled and the stage lights were cut off as Levitan was in the middle of his acceptance speech for best comedy.

Across the theater was a reminder that things change: one-time Emmy darling Tina Fey sitting barely unnoticed and trophy-free as her show "30 Rock" is coming to an end. She was one of the quickest people to bolt from her seat and head for the exit when the three-hour telecast ended.

The terrorism thriller "Homeland" won critical plaudits and the best drama Emmy, as well as top acting awards for Claire Danes and Damian Lewis. The writing for "Homeland" was also recognized. Showtime's first-ever best drama honoree prevented "Mad Men" from winning its fifth straight best drama Emmy.

Once showered with honors, AMC's "Mad Men" set a record Sunday with 17 nominations and zero wins, said Tom O'Neil of the Gold Derby website, which follows awards shows.

"We didn't make our show just to undermine them," Danes noted backstage. "We're delighted and thrilled and a little startled by this. I don't think anyone expected to be recognized like this right off the bat but it feels pretty nice."

Lewis, Danes' co-star, took note of "Breaking Bad" star Bryan Cranston, winner of three best actor Emmys who had been trying for a fourth on Sunday.

"I was quite convinced he would be walking up tonight," he said.

Along with the awards, there were a few cultural moments that lit up social media and will be water-cooler fodder as TV fans head back to work:

? Danes' odd "Mandy Patinkin, holla!" tribute to her fellow actor.

? Host Jimmy Kimmel and Tracy Morgan conspiring to start a rumor that Morgan had passed out onstage.

? Curve-accentuating dresses worn by the likes of Kat Dennings of "2 Broke Girls," Sofia Vergara of "Modern Family" and Christina Hendricks of "Mad Men."

? Jon Stewart punctuating his acceptance speech with an f-bomb, resulting in the only bleep of the evening.

Stewart's "The Daily Show" on Comedy Central is one of the Emmy Awards' sure things. It won the award for best variety show for the 10th straight year. CBS' "The Amazing Race" won its ninth award for best reality show in 10 years.

Probably the least-predicted winner was Jon Cryer of CBS' "Two and a Half Men" as best comic actor. He's won the best supporting actor award in the past as second banana to Charlie Sheen. But with Ashton Kutcher replacing Sheen in the cast last season, Cryer moved up in class. Even he was taken aback by the win, saying he figured two-time trophy winner Jim Parsons of "The Big Bang Theory" would get it.

"Don't panic, people. Something has clearly gone terribly wrong. I'm stunned," Cryer said after the award was announced.

HBO's freshman comedy "Veep" received mixed reviews, but Emmy voters loved veteran actress Julia Louis-Dreyfus, who won the best comedy actress award for her turn as a caustic U.S. vice president.

Julianne Moore's uncanny take on Gov. Sarah Palin in the TV movie "Game Change," about the 2008 presidential campaign, earned her best actress honors. The political film from HBO was also honored in the best miniseries-movie category.

"I feel so validated because Sarah Palin gave me a big thumbs down," Moore said, beaming.

Kevin Costner was named best actor for History's wildly popular miniseries "Hatfields & McCoys," while Tom Berenger was named best supporting actor for the project and Jessica Lange won supporting actress honors for "American Horror Story."

Standup comic Louis C.K. won the Emmy for best comedy writing for "Louie" and for the special "Louis C.K. Live at the Beacon Theatre." Said the comedian after his second win: "Thank you to audiences around the country who still go to see live comedy."

Stonestreet won his second supporting actor award in a comedy in three years for his portrayal of a gay stay-at-home dad. The category was a testament to the strength of "Modern Family" in the comedy world: he beat three other actors from the show in Ed O'Neill, Ty Burrell and Jesse Tyler Ferguson.

Stonestreet noted the importance of going out Sunday and celebrating with the rest of the cast.

"We know this isn't going to last forever," he said, "and it will be the old show in a couple of years."
