Though market shows steady increase, investors down in Tri-Cities

Stewart Beach hasn?t fielded any calls from people demanding he steer their money onto Wall Street.

On one hand, Beach, a financial adviser with Clear Perspective Advisors, of St. Charles and Aurora, acknowledges such an admission may seem incongruous.

Since early summer, the stock market has risen steadily, with Dow Jones Industrial Averages hitting levels not seen since before the market crash at the beginning of the Great Recession in 2007.

But while the market appears to have resumed its historical upward march, Beach and others who help Tri-Cities residents manage their money said their clients are responding to the seeming market rally with a bit of incredulity.

?I?m not getting any calls from clients yelling at me because we?re ?missing the market,? ? Beach said. ?They?re not saying, ?Put more money in!?

?Instead, what we?re hearing is a lot of people being really, really cautious.?

After the 2008 stock market crash, even otherwise optimistic investors opted for caution, pulling money out of the stock market and seeking safer investment vehicles in which to place their funds.

Based on the Dow Jones Industrial Average, the stock market has nearly erased all losses associated with the crash, hovering above 13,000 recently, just shy of the all-time high of about 14,000 in 2007.

?For the people that held the course, they?re almost back to where they were [in their portfolio value] to before the crash,? Beach said.

Dave Brady, a finance adviser and owner of Brady Investment Counsel of Geneva, said the generally steady nature of the stock market in recent months has prompted him and others to move clients back to what he called a ?fully allocated? position.

For most investors, that means putting about 60 percent of their portfolio in stocks.

?If our guidelines say a particular investor should be at a 60-40 stock allocation, then we are very comfortable right now getting them back to 60-40,? Brady said.

For many investors, the stock market represents the best choice for clients? long-term investing plans, Brady said. While the market will always present some risk, stocks have ?far outdone? other investment vehicles in returning gains.

Beach agreed investors have few realistic alternatives, with traditional savings vehicles returning virtually nothing.

?We know that, unless they just want to make sure they can?t lose anything, they?re not really excited at putting their money in the bank,? Stewart said. ?They?re not even keeping up with inflation.?

Reports filed with the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation reveal in the first half of this year, just before the months-long stock market rally began, most local banks reported declines of 3 to 27 percent in the amount of money invested in ?time deposits,? such as CDs.

While stocks have represented a better investment option, advisers cautioned against too much optimism.

Brady said he believes the market increases don?t necessarily represent economic growth. Rather, Brady said, it is merely the market returning to ?fair value.?

And Brian Green, a financial adviser at Capital Management Group in St. Charles, said the lack of healthy economic growth also has led him to counsel against investing too heavily in stocks.

?It?s really tough right now as a financial adviser for me to say, ?Everything?s going to work out as it always does,? ? Green said.

Recently, investors appear to be acting on their wariness.

A recent survey reported by the financial trends tracking organization, the Investment Company Institute, revealed investors continued in October to pull more money out of mutual funds than they put in, a trend that began in September.

During the seven-day period from Oct. 3 to 10, investors pulled $2.3 billion from mutual funds. That comes on top of more than $23 billion that flowed out of mutual funds from Sept. 12 to Oct. 3, the ICI report said.

Green said his clients are growing increasingly pessimistic about the market?s and economy?s future.

Green, Brady and Beach noted their clients have expressed worries over the upcoming presidential election, government debt, global political issues and the so-called ?fiscal cliff? ? a shorthand term that describes the mix of tax rule changes, regulatory changes, government spending cuts and higher tax rates for workers, businesses and investors that will take effect Jan. 1 unless Congress and President Barack Obama act to avert them.

Green said if investors are particularly worried, he ?doesn?t spend any time trying to talk them out? of increasing their cash holdings.

?If you are generally concerned, then earning 0.5 percent with no risk may not be such a bad thing, if it brings you some peace of mind,? Green said.

For now, advisers said they are counseling most clients to stay defensive and stand pat.

?The market right now is kind of like a traffic jam on a freeway,? Beach said. ?We?re jammed up, can?t see too far ahead, but generally moving slowly in a positive direction. And, just like in a traffic jam, now?s not the time to be trying to constantly switch lanes.?

Boeing rises in otherwise flat day on Wall Street

NEW YORK (Reuters) - Stocks were little changed on Wednesday, supported by a slight pickup in manufacturing and a surge in new home sales, while Boeing gained after raising its full-year forecast.

The muted morning action suggested the market was attempting to find its footing after a 3.3 percent fall in the S&P 500 over the past four sessions. Weak earnings outlooks and top-line revenue misses from large multinational companies reignited worries about a slowing global economy.

Boeing's more optimistic outlook bucked the recent string of disappointments from global giants including DuPont , United Technologies Corp and 3M Co , all of which lowered their full-year forecasts.

Investors have focused on weak revenue growth so far this earnings season, said Kate Warne, investment strategist at Edward Jones in St Louis.

"Certainly today we've seen some companies with better earnings, but overall, the trend remains one where investors are cautious," said Warne.

Just 38.2 percent of companies have reported revenue that beat analysts' expectations, while 61.8 percent have fallen short, according to Thomson Reuters data. In a typical quarter, 62 percent of companies beat estimates.

Shares of Boeing rose 1.3 percent to $73.74 after the commercial jet and defense company boosted its forecast for the third time this year.

The Dow Jones industrial average <.dji> gained 7.41 points, or 0.06 percent, to 13,109.94. The Standard & Poor's 500 Index <.spx> dropped 1.18 points, or 0.08 percent, to 1,411.93. The Nasdaq Composite Index <.ixic> dropped 8.59 points, or 0.29 percent, to 2,981.87.

Data suggested economic powerhouse China was slowly recovering from its weakest period of growth in three years. Manufacturing contracted again, but output hit a three-year high and order books were robust.

A preliminary look at U.S. manufacturing showed growth picked up a tad, but weaker overseas demand and uncertain domestic fiscal policy tempered the outlook for the sector.

New home sales surged in September to their highest level in nearly 2-1/2 years, sending housing stocks <.hgx> up 1.1 percent.

Dow Chemical Co , the largest chemical maker in the United States, said Tuesday it would cut 5 percent of its workforce and shut 20 plants to counter a slowing global economy. Its shares jumped 6.7 percent to $30.46.

Facebook Inc surged 20.6 percent to $23.52 after the social networking company increased mobile advertising revenue several times in the third quarter, a much quicker pace than expected.

Healthcare stocks rose, lifted by a 12.7 percent jump in Molina Healthcare Inc after the company posted third-quarter earnings and revenue that exceeded analysts' expectations. The Morgan Stanley healthcare payor index <.hmo> gained 1.3 percent.

The Federal Open Market Committee will conclude a two-day meeting on Wednesday. Analysts and primary dealers expect the FOMC to leave the benchmark fed funds rate in the current range of zero to 0.25 percent.

Dispute With Japan Takes Toll on Chinese Workers

GUANGZHOU, China? The worries and challenges of workers in this southern Chinese car-making city illustrate the risks Beijing faces as its dispute with Japan over a group of islands drags on.

The local economy is feeling the effects of a drop in demand for Japanese-brand cars. Work in the factories has slowed and employees are concerned about possible layoffs. Guangzhou is one of the main clusters for China's automotive industry, employing tens of thousands of plant workers.

"Workers don't have overtime so their salary is less and our sales aren't as good as before," said Niu He Guo, 27 years old, ...

How a fish broke a law of physics

Monday, October 22, 2012

Reflective surfaces polarize light, a phenomenon that fishermen or photographers overcome by using polarizing sunglasses or polarizing filters to cut our reflective glare. However, PhD student Tom Jordan from the Bristol Centre for Complexity Sciences and his supervisors Professor Julian Partridge and Dr Nicholas Roberts in Bristol's School of Biological Sciences found that these silvery fish have overcome this basic law of reflection ? an adaptation that may help them evade predators.

Previously, it was thought that the fish's skin ? which contains "multilayer" arrangements of reflective guanine crystals ? would fully polarize light when reflected. As the light becomes polarized, there should be a drop in reflectivity.

The Bristol researchers found that the skin of sardines and herring contain not one but two types of guanine crystal ? each with different optical properties. By mixing these two types, the fish's skin doesn't polarize the reflected light and maintains its high reflectivity.

Dr Roberts said: "We believe these species of fish have evolved this particular multilayer structure to help conceal them from predators, such as dolphin and tuna. These fish have found a way to maximize their reflectivity over all angles they are viewed from. This helps the fish best match the light environment of the open ocean, making them less likely to be seen."

As a result of this ability, the skin of silvery fish could hold the key to better optical devices. Tom Jordan said: "Many modern day optical devices such as LED lights and low loss optical fibres use these non-polarizing types of reflectors to improve efficiency. However, these man-made reflectors currently require the use of materials with specific optical properties that are not always ideal. The mechanism that has evolved in fish overcomes this current design limitation and provides a new way to manufacture these non-polarizing reflectors."

Curiosity rover collects fourth scoop of Martian soil

ScienceDaily (Oct. 22, 2012) ? NASA's Mars rover Curiosity shook a scoopful of dusty sand inside its sample-handling mechanism on Sol 75 (Oct. 21, 2012) as the third scrubbing of interior surfaces of the mechanism.

The rover team is instructing the rover to deliver a sieved sample from this scoopful -- the mission's fourth -- onto Curiosity's observation tray on Oct. 22 and plans to analyze another sample from the same scoopful with the Chemistry and Mineralogy (CheMin) instrument this week.

Curiosity collected this fourth scoop of soil on Sol 74 (Oct. 20). A later scoop will become the first delivered to the Sample Analysis at Mars (SAM) instrument. While continuing with scooping activities at the "Rocknest" site, the rover also has been examining surroundings with the Chemistry and Camera (ChemCam) and Mast Camera (Mastcam) instruments, and monitoring environmental conditions with the Radiation Assessment Detector (RAD), Rover Environmental Monitoring Station (REMS) and Dynamic Albedo of Neutrons (DAN) instruments of its science payload.

Sol 75, in Mars local mean solar time at Gale Crater, ended at 8:58 a.m. Oct. 22, PDT (11:58 a.m., EDT).

What's Donald Trump's October Surprise?

Trump (Comedy Central)

Donald Trump, the real estate mogul, reality TV star and de facto leader of the "birther" movement, says he is planning a "big announcement" about President Barack Obama.

"I have something very, very big concerning the president of the United States," Trump told "Fox & Friends" on Monday during a phone interview. "I will be announcing it sometime probably Wednesday and it's going to be very big."

"Will it change the election?" co-host Gretchen Carlson asked Trump.

"Possibly," Trump replied. "It's very big?bigger than anybody would know."

Trump?who has been live-tweeting during the presidential debates?said he would likely make the announcement on "the Twitter."

The "Celebrity Apprentice" host was supposed to deliver a "big surprise" at the Republican National Convention in Tampa, Fla., but Hurricane Isaac forced the GOP to cut his appearance from the truncated schedule. The "big surprise"? A video featuring an Obama impersonator who Trump predictably fired.

Kate Sanner ? Use Audio to Market Your Practice - Faiththomas1ss ...

Audio is a valuable marketing tool that should be in your practice?s marketing tool box.? Why?? Because next to hearing you speak in person, there?s nothing more effective than audio.?One of the best ways to get your message out is through creating audio content. When you consistently deliver the message of your practice in your voice, you gain credibility and you give your audience (aka target market) the opportunity to know, like and trust you ? which helps you get more clients.

If you would like to listen to this post instead, here is the audio version:

Now, I have to let you know that I am very biased in favor of audio.? I fell in love with it several years ago- and I fell hard!? So much so that I set up my own in-home recording studio and even ran an internet radio station for several years (I?m a hands-on person and I LOVE tools of all sorts!)? BUT you don?t have to have an in-home studio to create audio.? All you need is great content and a telephone or a microphone that plugs right into your computer.? When I am not using my in-home recording studio, I use Audio Acrobat which is a fantastic service.

7 benefits of using audio to market your practice

Audio?

 1. positions you as an expert with your target market
 2. positions you as?a leader?in your industry
 3. builds credibility ? as your audience listens to your voice and your words, the trust in you begins to grow
 4. increases exposure and enables you to reach a wider audience - as you post audio in different places (e.g. iTunes, social media more people learn about you)
 5. leverages your time and your efforts ? e.g., you can re-purpose written content into audio
 6. enables you to create a targeted, benefits-driven message to your audience
 7. is completely time-shiftable ? i.e., it can be listened to any time, anywhere

7 ways you can use audio:

 1. Have informational audios on your website in addition to articles.? Choose a topic that matches the needs and wants of your target market and give tips or solutions in your audio
 2. Record your signature talk and offer it as a free taste of your expertise
 3. Use audio for your opt-in offer on your website
 4. Use audio as an ?audition? for speaking engagements
 5. Host teleseminars and teleclasses ? free or paid
 6. Give an expert interview ? Write out some questions you would like to be asked in your area of expertise. Then ask a colleague or friend with a good speaking voice to record the interview with you. Don?t make this recording a hard sell of your business. (Of course, your URL can be announced in your introduction and at the end and it can be printed onto the CD.) Instead, use this interview to really showcase your expertise and establish your credibility.
 7. Interview experts ? Record interviews with experts that can provide great, expert information for your target audience. You can post these on your site as freebies or bundle several together and create a product that is a great opt-in offer.

Note:? Make sure to always include your website URL when you give your contact information in the audio.

Action Step to use audio

If you are just getting started, familiarize yourself with how to record audio on your computer or sign up for a free trial of Audio Acrobat.? Find content that isn?t too long and record your first audio.? Post it on your blog and share it on social media.? Look over your articles, blog posts, etc. and see what is content that would make a good audio.

Once you get more experienced, consider hosting regular teleclasses that provides great content and serve to launch new products and services you create.? A free teleclass is a tried and true way to get prospects into your marketing funnel.

P.S.??I can help you design a marketing plan that is right for your practice ? including the strategy of creating audio. ?Sign up for one of my coaching and consulting packages today!

Here again is the audio version of this post:

White House prepared to meet with Iran

WASHINGTON (AP) ? The White House says it is prepared to talk one-on-one with Iran to find a diplomatic settlement to the impasse over Tehran's reported pursuit of nuclear weapons, but there's no agreement now to meet.

National Security Council spokesman Tommy Vietor said Saturday that President Barack Obama has made clear that he will prevent Iran from getting a nuclear weapon and will do whatever's necessary to block that from happening. Vietor said Iran must come in line with its obligations, or else faced increased pressure.

"The onus is on the Iranians to do so, otherwise they will continue to face crippling sanctions and increased pressure," Vietor said in a statement. He noted that efforts to get Iran back to the table with the five permanent members of the U.N. Security Council and Germany ? the so-called "P5+1" ? continue.

Iran has been a recurring issue in the presidential election campaign and Vietor's statement was released shortly after The New York Times reported Saturday that the U.S. and Iran have agreed in principle for the first time to negotiations. The paper said Iran has insisted the talks wait until after the Nov. 6 election.

Vietor, however, denied that any such agreement had been reached.

"It's not true that the United States and Iran have agreed to one-on-one talks or any meeting after the American elections," he said. "We continue to work with the P5+1 on a diplomatic solution and have said from the outset that we that we would be prepared to meet bilaterally."

Obama and Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney will meet Monday night in a debate focusing on foreign policy and Iran's nuclear ambitions will likely be a topic. Obama has said he'll prevent Iran from acquiring nuclear weapons. He hopes sanctions alongside negotiations can get Iran to halt uranium enrichment. But the strategy, which began during President George W. Bush's administration, hasn't worked yet. Obama holds out the threat of military action as a last resort. Romney has accused Obama of being weak on Iran and says the U.S. needs to present a greater military threat.

Despite unprecedented global penalties, Iran's nuclear program is advancing as it continues to defy international pressure, including four rounds of sanctions from the U.N. Security Council, to prove that its atomic intentions are peaceful.

Those sanctions, coupled with tough measures imposed by the United States and European nations are taking their toll, particularly on Iran's economy. Iranian authorities have in recent weeks been forced to quell protests over the plummeting value of the country's currency. The rial lost nearly 40 percent of its value against the U.S. dollar in a week in early October, but has since slightly rebounded.

U.S. officials say they are hopeful that pressure from the sanctions may be pushing Iran's leaders toward concessions, including direct talks with the United States. But several said on Saturday that they did not believe such discussions would happen any time soon.

If one-on-one talks are to occur, they would likely follow the model that the U.S. has used in six-nation nuclear disarmament talks with North Korea, the officials said.

In those discussions, U.S. negotiators have met separately with their North Korean counterparts but only as part of the larger effort, which also involves China, Japan, South Korea and Russia. Direct U.S.-North Korean talks are preceded and followed by intense consultations with the other members of the group.

However, the direct talks with North Korea have yet to bear fruit and U.S. officials warned that talks with Iran may not yield anything either. If U.S.-Iran talks do occur, they would likely be part of the P5+1 process, which groups the Britain, China, France, Germany, Russia and the United States and is overseen by the European Union. The group has met numerous times with Iranian officials but has yet to achieve any significant progress.

In late September, the group instructed EU foreign policy chief Catherine Ashton to reach out to Iran's top nuclear negotiator, Saeed Jalili, to organize another meeting. No date had been set for the possible resumption of talks.

Iran says its program is for peaceful energy and research purposes but Western nations fear the Islamic republic is determined to develop nuclear weapons and fundamentally reshape the balance of power in the Middle East. That would pose a grave threat to Israel.

Israel has threatened to strike Iran's nuclear facilities if Tehran doesn't stop uranium enrichment a process that can be a pathway to nuclear arms. Israel could decide to strike Iran's nuclear sites on its own, and Israeli leaders say time to act is running out. They have also hinted they would like U.S. support for any such attack.

An Israeli strike on Iran with or without Washington's involvement would likely draw retribution from Tehran including possible attacks on U.S. and Israeli interests overseas or disruptions to the transit of tankers through the Strait of Hormuz, which could send oil prices skyrocketing.

Obama has counseled patience as public as American public support for another Mideast conflict is low with the Iraq war over and the conflict in Afghanistan winding down.

(AP) ? Some Colorado fans are upset after music superstar Madonna used guns during a performance in a community that is still raw from a mass shooting at a local theater and a violent summer that includes the unsolved slaying of a 10-year-old girl.

Madonna's second act at her show Thursday night at the Pepsi Center in Denver featured the 54-year-old singer using a fake gun to shoot a masked gunman and images of blood splattering on a large screen behind the stage. She used the set for her performances in other cities for the song "Gang Bang," which includes the lyrics "shot my lover in the head."

"We're dancing and all of a sudden people started realizing what the song was," said concert-goer Aaron Fransua, 25, who was in section 120. "We all just stood there. Everybody who was around me all had shock on their face. I heard a lot of 'wows,'" Fransua said.

Mile High Sports Radio Denver personality Peter Burns, who was in another section, said the people around him began murmuring when the song came on.

"You could see people kinda looking at each other," Burns said. "I heard the word 'Colorado,' you know, 'Aurora,' 'shooting.' You could hear people talking about it and it was little bit unsettling. I saw two or three people get up and grab their stuff and actually leave their seats."

The scene reminded some concert-goers of the July 20 shooting at an Aurora theater where a gunman dressed in black and wearing a helmet, body armor and a gas mask stepped through a side door and opened fire with a semi-automatic rifle and pistols, killing 12 people and injuring at least another 58, some of whom may be disabled for life.

Burns was friends with Jessica Ghawi, 24, who died in the shooting.

"It sort of hits closer to home for me," he said.

The Denver metro-area is still reeling from the unsolved abduction and slaying of Jessica Ridgeway, and on Thursday before the concert, police announced they had three suspects in custody in the slaying of five people at a bar and grill in east Denver.

Denver television stations said they received a number of complaints Friday from concert-goers saying they were offended she used guns and violence as part of her show in light of the recent shootings.

Her press agent, Liz Rosenberg, said Friday that there was no way to eliminate the scene, because it is a core part of the show.

"It's like taking out the third act of Hamlet," she said.

Rosenberg said Madonna's style is to shake things up.

"Madonna does not make things pretty and tie them up with a bow," she said.

In a statement before beginning the tour, Madonna said she does not condone the use of guns.

"Rather they are symbols of wanting to appear strong and wanting to find a way to stop feelings that I find hurtful or damaging," she said.

She said she is using the guns as symbols of intolerance and "the pain I have felt from having my heart broken."

Both Burns and Fransua said they took the act as just part of the show, though both felt uneasy about it.

"It would have highly upset me if I felt this was something that she added," for the Denver show, Burns said. "But you know this, that song, that production will be played in 50 other cities and Denver would be the only city that would have some major issues."

What women want Fujitsu's Floral Kiss Ultrabook with preinstalled horoscope app

Fujitsu has just revealed its Windows 8 lineup for the Japanese market, and top billing goes to the new "Floral Kiss" Ultrabook, which the manufacturer claims was built "under the direction" of its female employees in order to entice an equally female audience. At heart, it's just a regular Core i5 notebook with a 500GB hard drive, but the womanliness is all in the presentation. There are subtle color schemes like "feminine pink" and "luxury brown" to choose from and every laptop comes with pre-installed Windows 8 apps including a digital scrapbook for collecting website bookmarks, a diary and a daily horoscope checker. This almost oppressively enticing bundle will hit stores on November 2nd, with some sort of premium designer version arriving a few weeks later. As for the exact price, that'll be determined by retailers in Japan and by how good your husband is at haggling.

(AP) ? President Barack Obama on Thursday rejected criticism that his administration has offered a confused response to the attack on the U.S. Consulate in Libya, an accusation made repeatedly by Republican challenger Mitt Romney in their campaign for the White House. Of any breakdown that might have led to the killing of four Americans, Obama declared: "We're going to fix it."

On a campaign day where the politics of comedy were to flavor the presidential race, Comedy Central host Jon Stewart got serious in pressing Obama over the government's changing explanation about the Sept. 11 attacks in Benghazi. When Stewart suggested that even Obama would concede his administration's coordination and communication had not been "optimal," Obama said: "If four Americans get killed, it's not optimal. We're going to fix it. All of it."

Romney has pointedly questioned Obama's handling of the matter and his honesty about it to voters. Those accusations led to the fiercest conflict of the presidential debate on Tuesday and will surely come to the fore again on Monday in the campaign's final debate.

Appearing in a taping of Comedy Central's "The Daily Show," Obama insisted information was shared with the American people as it came in. The attack is under investigation, Obama said, and "the picture eventually gets filled in."

The exchange came on a day when Vice President Joe Biden compared the policies of Romney's running mate, Rep. Paul Ryan of Wisconsin, to a gun pointed at Americans, and after Romney's son said he was tempted to "take a swing" at Obama when the Democrat questions the GOP candidate's honesty.

Ryan, speaking at a campaign stop in Ocala, Fla., before Biden delivered his comments, accused Obama of sending a divisive message.

"He's basically trying to disqualify his opponent with a sea of negativity," Ryan said. "He's trying to divide this country, pitting people against each other. He's trying to win this election by default. You know what? We're not going to let him get away with that."

The sharpness of the barbs is a reflection of just how tight the race is 19 days out. Hard campaign decisions are being made, state by state.

Romney aides said Thursday that no staff had been dispatched to Michigan or Pennsylvania, where they once suggested he would compete aggressively but has not.

The bickering between campaigns was supposed to take a break Thursday night as both candidates address the Alfred E. Smith Memorial Foundation Dinner, a white-tie gala at New York City's Waldorf Astoria Hotel that has been a required stop for politicians since the end of World War II.

The evening's political dinner is named for the four-term Democratic governor of New York who lost the 1928 presidential race to Republican Herbert Hoover. Smith was the first Catholic to run for president and the dinner named for him is organized by the Catholic Archdiocese of New York for the benefit of needy children.

In keeping with tradition, both candidates prepared lighthearted remarks for the event. That was also the case four years ago when Obama and GOP nominee John McCain poked fun at themselves and each other just a day after an intense presidential debate at Hofstra University on Long Island.

As in 2008, this year's dinner follows a confrontational debate, also at Hofstra, lending an air of drama to the pivot from acrimony to humor.

Democrats are pushing the accusation that Romney is being dishonest, taking up Obama's refrain since Tuesday's debate that the GOP nominee is offering "a sketchy deal."

"I don't think they were just sketchy," Biden said at a rally in Las Vegas. "I think they were Etch-a-Sketchy."

Obama and Biden are to campaign together next Tuesday in Ohio after Monday night's final debate.

On Libya, Obama has faced scrutiny for shifting explanations of what happened. He pushed back on Thursday.

"We weren't confused about the fact that four Americans had been killed," Obama said.

"I wasn't confused about the fact that we needed to ramp up diplomatic security. ... I wasn't confused about the fact that we had to investigate exactly happened so it gets fixed. And I wasn't confused about the fact that we're going to hunt down whoever did it and bring them to justice," the president said.

On another national security issue, Obama said he still wants to close the prison for terrorism suspects at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, a big unmet promise of his 2008 campaign. The effort was blocked by Congress, which passed a law prohibiting the government from moving prisoners to the U.S. for detention or trial.

Earlier, in Nevada, Biden accused GOP vice presidential nominee Ryan of sharing a cynical vision of Americans with Romney.

"Ryan has written a book called the 'Young Guns' with two other members of the House," Biden said. "Unfortunately, the bullets are aimed at you."

Romney campaign spokesman Brendan Buck responded that Biden's "over-the-top rhetoric" was disappointing but not surprising.

"In the absence of a vision or plan to move the country forward, the vice president is left only with ugly political attacks beneath the dignity of the office he occupies," Buck said in a statement emailed to reporters.

The finger-pointing comes after the heated debate this week between Obama and Romney. The GOP nominee's oldest son, Tagg, was asked by a North Carolina radio host Wednesday how it feels to hear the president "call your dad a liar" ? a word Obama never used although he repeatedly said Romney's statements weren't true.

Tagg Romney laughed at the question. "You want to rush down the debate stage and take a swing at him. But you know you can't do that because, well first cause there is a lot of Secret Service between you and him, but also because it's the nature of the process," he said.

Another Romney son, Josh, said on ABC's "The View" on Thursday that his brother didn't mean it but was responding to the emotions that arise in the heat of the campaign.

"That brother has slugged me a couple times. I assure you President Obama has nothing to worry about," Josh Romney quipped. "You really don't like to see your dad get beat up by the media or President Obama or whatever it is, so you take it pretty personally. But I think that was just something he was saying off the cuff and I assure you he didn't mean it."

Their mother, Ann Romney, also appearing on "The View," said the negativity of the campaign is very difficult for their family and she initially didn't want to go through another campaign after losing the 2008 Republican primary. She said she agreed to a second run because she feels her husband is uniquely qualified to bring economic hope and prosperity to America

But she didn't hesitate when co-host Barbara Walters asked whether her husband's political career will end if he doesn't win on Nov. 6.

"Absolutely," Mrs. Romney said. "He will not run again, nor will I."

The president campaigned earlier Thursday in tightly contested New Hampshire and asked the state's voters to give him more time in office to get the economy back on track. "I need your help to finish what we started in 2008."

On the celebrity front, Obama picked up the endorsement of rock star Bruce Springsteen, who also backed the Democrat in 2008 and Thursday campaigned for him in Ohio with former President Bill Clinton.

"For 30 years I've been writing about the distance between the American dream and American reality," Springsteen said, reading from a statement on his music stand. "Our vote is the one principal way we get to determine that distance."

Going Back to Work is Frequently a Challenge for Parents Who've ...

Advice
Quandary Considered

Every Friday, we pose a question to the Motherlode community. The next week, we pull together the best responses. Got a quandary? E-mail KJ ?.

Last week, Jennifer Romaniuk wrote the Motherlode with a passionate parental quandary. ?I voluntarily walked away from a promising career,? she e-mailed. ?I had no idea how long it would take to claw my way back.? The decision to stay home seemed like the right one when she made it. Spending more time with her children would be fun; ending the race between work and child care for her two kids would make life feel less daunting for her and for her fast-tracked husband.

But when the child-care pressures began to ease, Ms. Romaniuk was a different person in a different employment market, overqualified for the entry level but not experienced enough for senior positions, and facing businesses (in her case, law firms) who aren?t taking many chances on employees any more. Re-entry hasn?t just been hard, it has been making her regret the choice she made almost a decade ago.

It?s one peril of all the conversation that surrounds the choices parents make when their children are young (primarily mothers, but fathers as well): when we emerge, we may feel less like one person in the midst of a transition than like some sort of cautionary tale, or icon of the ways policy and culture undermine women and parents. It?s hard to view ourselves with compassion when judgments are more common than understanding. Parents moving in and out of the job search right now aren?t the only ones in transition. The ways we see work and gender and balance are shifting as well. The result is a world in which it?s nearly impossible not to find some way to regret our choices while at the same time being forced to contemplate how ?lucky? we were to have the ability to make the choice.

But this conversation was exceptional, both for its relative lack of harsh judgment and for its willingness to accept the premise that as ?lucky? as Ms. Romaniuk might have been to have the financial ability to stay at home with her kids, she might indeed be feeling pretty unlucky now. Readers had much direct advice for Ms. Romaniuk. I also heard from Carol Fishman Cohen, co-author of ?Back on the Career Track: A Guide for Stay-at-Home-Moms Who Want to Return to Work? (sorry, guys, no gender equity in that title), who vehemently disagreed with Ms. Romaniuk?s frustrated declaration that ?if you choose to step away from your career, you might never get it back.? She sent me seven steps to restarting a career (which I?ve invited her to post here in the comments section) that aptly summarized many suggestions: network, open yourself to new options, volunteer, persist.

But many of us, myself included, heard in this mother?s frustrated words a need for something more than career advice. When a person has identified with a particular career for much, if not all, of her (or his) adult life, changing that is rarely easy. But most parents change it at a moment when the need for that change feels overwhelming: a new baby, or the ?daunting? combination of child-care needs, employment pressures and ?grumpy, hungry children? that Ms. Romaniuk described. It?s a relief to just let one side of that see-saw drop.

It?s later ? when the grumpy, hungry children are older, when the baby is walking herself to school, when the wild immediacy of life has calmed ? that the full impact of the change intrudes itself. Even people who loathed their former jobs, or who left the business world planning an eventual shift to art or writing or entrepreneurship, or who are more than happy in an at-home role, can find themselves blindsided. When the baby is tiny, or the children are all under 5, or the special needs demand constant advocacy, we don?t have to find our place in the world ? our place has got an iron grip around our knees. It?s only when that grip loosens that the onus is back on us.

And that?s the tough part. How many books have been written to ease us through transitions and change? How many poems and songs and odes and Web sites dedicated to figuring out who we are in the world? Oodles. One transitive moment is not the time to look back and assess ? it?s anything but.

So my advice to Jennifer echoes the words of lynninny, AW, and CC Mom: try to take the long view (or maybe, for the moment, don?t take any view at all). It?s not just that ?what?s done is done,? but that the way you really feel about your years and choices is colored by your current discouragement.

I?ve been there. I think most of us have. There is a moment, in any transition, when you are at the bottom of the next climb and the whole slog just looks impossible. My advice with respect to the slog is to find a way ? any way ? to enjoy it. If you?re a list maker, make the best lists you can and relish every check mark. Love interviewing? Relish every interview for itself. Get dressed every morning whether you?re going to work or not. And check out my friend Amy Gutman?s Plan B Nation blog for a way into a community that?s more about the economics and social impact of the challenges of a career change at this moment than about the way parenthood affects that journey. Sometimes it?s time to step out of that part of your identity socially as well as in the career sense. (I found that community in The Well a decade ago, when I was certain I would never, ever be able to create a real career again. You can get a sense of my emotions at the time from my username: kjinexile.)

Career-wise, find a few people who you ?want to be when you grow up? and look at their arcs. Ten years ago, where were they? What were they doing? Can you do any of it? That?s another great way to try to break through what feels like an impasse. ?Think outside the box? is solid advice (and it appeared many times), but it helps to have a starting place for those thoughts.

I see this ? the ?re-entry? ? as just one more thing parents of both sexes need to keep out in the open. The conversation may provoke judgment, but it also promotes change. People who were able to work straight through having a family may remember that different circumstances ? a move, a child with particular needs, social pressure ? might have changed their course, while parents who?ve ?on-ramped? can work to make it easier for others in their fields. Every single parent, everywhere, of any sex, solved the problem of having babies who needed full-time care at some point. Every single parent of young school-age children daily solves the problem of where those children will be from 3:00 on. We need to recognize those things far more often, so that when our solutions are failing, or we?re changing stages, we know right away that we?re not the only ones who?ve ?been there.?

A shorter version of this post appeared in print on Oct. 18, on Page D2.

Amid ongoing economic crisis, EU celebrates 'Single Market Week'

The EU is celebrating the 20th anniversary of the single market this week, in part to point out that despite the economic crisis wracking Europe, the union has brought positive changes too.

By Peter Teffer,?Contributor / October 15, 2012

A statue of a globe painted with the EU flag and a peace dove stands in the garden of a church near the EU Council in Brussels, on Oct. 12. The European Union won the Nobel Peace Prize on Friday for its efforts to promote peace and democracy in Europe, despite being in the midst of its biggest crisis since the bloc was created in the 1950s.

News reports about the European Union nowadays do not give much reason for celebration. Greece is on the brink of economic collapse, other European countries are also in severe economic troubles, and shrinking solidarity is going hand-in-hand with reviving stereotypes. Yes, the European Union won the Nobel Peace Prize last week, but this news was quickly met with cynical comments.

Nevertheless, the EU today kicked off a week of celebrations, commemorating the 20th anniversary of the single market, which allows Europeans and their goods to move around all 27 member states without borders or barriers. The Single Market Week encompasses events all around Europe, with various ?opportunities to discuss the main achievements of the Single Market.? Some of these include ?cheaper calls abroad,? ?safer toys,? and ?more rights for travelers,? according to documents handed out to attendees of the launch event of the Single Market Week at the European Parliament in Brussels.

The celebration comes at a time when citizens' trust in the European Union is at an all-time low, according to the most recent survey by Eurobarometer. Only 31 percent of EU citizens say they trust the European Union (mind you: they trust their national governments even less). Also, 28 percent have a flat-out negative view of the EU ? almost double the figure of six years ago.

According to some of the speakers today, the European Union doesn't always receive the credit it deserves. ?Citizens don't attribute their cheaper mobile phone bills to the single market,? said Malcolm Harbour, a member of the European Parliament for the British Conservative party, during a meeting with journalists. ?Sometimes we forget how much has been achieved. The free movement of people, students studying abroad ? citizens take that for granted.?

Mr. Harbour has a point. I arrived here in Brussels yesterday from the Netherlands, without realizing that my train didn't have to stop at the border. The only reason I brought my passport was to show it at the security check of the European Parliament. And it is not just free movement of journalists and other Europeans. If I want, I can buy as many Belgian waffles as I want without having to declare them at the border.

As European Commissioner Michel Barnier said: ?Our lives have been made easier.? But as with most advancements, we quickly take them for granted. So how to make the people more aware of these things?
