Review: Shardana - Food, Drinks and Dance

Amidst the hustle and bustle of busy Playa d?en Bossa, snuggled away on a back street is Shardana ? a small restaurant and bar offering the perfect place for a chilled night out.

Every Friday locals head to Shardana for APERITIVE IN MUSIC, a night of quality underground music, cocktails and a tasty free buffet.? Still somewhat of a hidden gem, you enter through a pretty flowery canopy into a dimly lit pool area, with a small modern bar inside.? Friendly staff serve up wine and spirits for reasonable prices ? a vodka and mixer only sets me back ?7 ? and the DJ is set up at the far end of the bar playing deep tech house.

Drink in hand I choose to find a seat outside by the pool.? People are lounging on white beds looking relaxed and laughing, and you can still hear the music in the background just loud enough over conversation.? Finding a little table to sit down by I notice the crowd seems to be?mainly locals, plus?a few familiar faces from DC10.? The vibe is very chilled and intimate but the DJ keeps a lively atmosphere about the place.

Tonight the music is provided by Gritter, a UK based underground house and techno party, run by Rogan, HoH and Rio.? Different visiting DJ?s play each week, and June has seen hosts like Lola with Le Loup and Julian Perez.? Most people are sitting outside but you can imagine this would be a great little bar for a dance when it gets busier later on in the season.

A nice touch is the free buffet.? Plates of tomato topped brushetta, salads, juicy strips of steak and other finger food are continuously being laid out throughout the evening.? The restaurant has a reputation for good food and the buffet does not disappoint, meaning I go back for seconds and thirds!

It is refreshing to find somewhere with a sense of sophisticated tranquillity amongst the 2 for 1 tourist-led cocktail bars of Playa d?en Bossa.? The perfect alternative to the big nightclubs if you are looking for a more chilled drink and dance but still want to hear some great music.?

Betty Ford remembered at California memorial service (Reuters)

PALM DESERT, Calif (Reuters) ? Former first lady Betty Ford was remembered on Tuesday for her activism and pioneering work for addicts at a memorial service in California that drew leading political lights of the past four decades.

First lady Michelle Obama, Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, former President George W. Bush and former first lady Nancy Reagan sat shoulder to shoulder in the second row of mourners at St. Margaret's Episcopal Church in Palm Desert.

Ford, wife of late President Gerald Ford who helped found a world-renowned rehabilitation clinic that bears her name in nearby Rancho Mirage, died on Friday at the age of 93.

"Betty Ford was my friend and I'm honored to be here today (to) help celebrate her life, which was truly remarkable," former first lady Rosalynn Carter said in eulogizing her White House predecessor.

"She was never afraid to speak the truth, even about the most sensitive subjects, including her own struggles with alcohol and painkillers," Carter told the 800 mourners, including former California first lady Maria Shriver, former U.S. Secretary of State Henry Kissinger and presidential daughters Lucy Baines Johnson and Tricia Nixon-Cox.

Carter, the wife of former President Jimmy Carter, praised Ford's early work publicizing the fight against breast cancer and willingness to "do things a bit differently" than they had been done in the past.

"She was a tireless advocate for those struggling," Carter said.

National Public Radio journalist Cokie Roberts said she had been personally chosen by Ford to deliver a eulogy, and that the former first lady had "wanted me to remind everyone of the way things used to be in Washington."

A MESSAGE FOR WASHINGTON?

In fact, Roberts said, "I wouldn't be at all surprised if she timed her death to make sure that she could convey the message of comity during this week when it seems so badly needed" -- an apparent reference to the stalemate between Republicans and Democrats over raising the debt limit.

Geoffrey Mason, a former board member of the Betty Ford Clinic in Rancho Mirage, took the podium with the words "My name is Geoff, and I'm an alcoholic" -- echoing the introduction given by participants in 12-step substance abuse programs.

Mason said he had no recollection of Ford as first lady but knew her instead as the face of the Betty Ford Center, a woman whose courage in facing her own addictions to alcohol and prescription drugs helped thousands of others to do the same.

"Thank you God for bringing this extraordinary woman, this brave and inspirational pioneer, into our lives," Mason said.

The service began as an eight-member uniformed military honor guard carried Ford's dark wood casket into the sand-colored church, tucked into desert foothills not far from her Rancho Mirage home and surrounded by palm trees.

The public was offered an opportunity to view the casket from 5 p.m. local time until midnight at the church.

After a brief ceremony at the Palm Springs airport on Wednesday, Ford's remains will depart for Grand Rapids, Michigan, where they will again lie in repose.

A final private ceremony will occur at the Grace Episcopal Church in Grand Rapids on Thursday.

Ford's body will be interred next to her husband's at the Gerald R. Ford Museum.

Ford, once dubbed the "fighting first lady" by Time magazine for her outspoken political views, was a vocal supporter of women's rights while her husband was president from 1974 to 1977.

She also led early efforts to raise awareness of the battle against breast cancer after undergoing a mastectomy in 1974, less than two months after her husband succeeded the disgraced Richard Nixon as president.

Toxin-Free Home Fragrances | Old Fashioned Homemaking

Scent and sight combine for a truly stylish home

(ARA) ? Whether your home is an expression of clean-lined modernism in stainless steel and glass or a warm and worn harmony of earth tones and antique furnishings, an often-overlooked element of home style is the unseen atmosphere that you breathe. Customizing a unique palette of aromatic style is no less an expression of your personal taste than the selection of wall color, furnishing and fabrics.

Toxin Free Home FragrancesMore importantly, if you want a home that?s toxin-free, you?ll want to select home fragrance options carefully, and not choose synthetic commercial options.

Synthetic-based home fragrance products like conventional plug-ins, fabric deodorizers and room sprays are often associated with adverse physical reactions and increased chemical sensitivity in humans and pets. These scents are also often very obtrusive and lack the subtle nuances of 100 percent pure essential oils ? true aromas that are created in nature.

The basic elements of safe and natural aromatic style begin with individual essential oils which are steam distilled from plants. Essential oils are extracted from roots, woods, resins, leaves, flowers, fruits and seeds. Synthetic fragrances, on the other hand, rely on highly concentrated hydrocarbon molecules that are synthesized from non-renewable petroleum.

According to Aura Cacia aromatherapy expert, Tom Havran, the aromatic characteristics of essential oils are divided into radiant middle notes, long-lasting base notes and fresh top notes. The most effective natural home fragrance is composed of a blend of essential oils that captures a balance of middle, base and top note oils. The process of creating this aromatic balance is similar to what you?d do to create visual balance as you select a palette of home decorating colors with an eye toward the main middle ground hue, the darker base shades and the lighter top highlights of your color scheme.

The basics of blending aroma start with the selection of individual essential oils. These are usually available at your nearest natural foods supermarket or co-op or online from a trusted source like Aura Cacia. Begin your signature scent with the middle note or heart of the aroma, based on your goal. Do you want something woody and earthy, or light and fresh, for example? Next, enhance the middle note with a related top note that will help your aroma expand and radiate throughout the air. Finally, select a base note that will give your blend stability and staying power as it diffuses throughout your home. There are dozens of essential oils with various aromatic characteristics to choose from and inspire you. Seek out a retailer near you that features a display of essential oils along with tester bottles so that you can sample a variety of scents before you purchase.

To get started, Havran suggests the following essential oils for their note classifications:

  • Middle note essential oils include rose, jasmine, neroli, balsam fir, pine.
  • Top note essential oils include lemon, grapefruit, lavender, eucalyptus, peppermint.
  • Base note essential oils include sandalwood, patchouli, vetiver, cedarwood.

Havran then suggests you consider these blends to find the scent that complements your home?s style.

  • Sleek and modern style: Middle note: four drops neroli; top note: six drops eucalyptus; base note: two drops cedarwood.
  • Earthy and natural style: Middle note: Five drops balsam fir; top note: five drops grapefruit; base note: two drops vetiver.
  • Light and airy style: Middle note: eight drops pine; top note: two drops peppermint; base note: two drops cedarwood.
  • Passion and mystery style: Middle note: three drops jasmine; top note: four drops lemon; base note: five drops patchouli.

Feel free to experiment with the proportions (making sure to keep good notes so you can replicate the aroma) until you arrive at your ideal. When you have your blend ready, it?s easy to incorporate the scent into one or more natural and stylish home scenting options.

Fabric freshening mist

Use this simple, natural option (rather than a chemical cover-up spray) to deodorize your home:

Ingredients:

4 ounces water
24 drops essential oil blend

Directions:

Combine water and oils in a small spray bottle. Shake vigorously and lightly mist curtains and upholstered furnishings.

Candle lamp diffusion

Use a candle lamp diffuser ? with an unscented, paraffin-free tea light candle ? to suit your individual decor. This is a much less toxic option than synthetically scented candles.

Ingredients:

1/4 cup water
10 to 12 drops essential oil blend

Directions:

Place water in bowl of diffuser lamp. Add oil. Light candle and warm the liquid to release the aroma. Note: Extinguish candle before bowl burns dry.

Dried botanical diffusion

Sprinkle your aroma blend over an artful selection of dried botanical specimens ? such as dried flowers, seed pods, whole spices, cones and interesting twigs. You can collect these items from nature or buy them at craft stores and can even find some online at sites like Frontier Natural Products Co-op.

Ingredients:

Bowl of dried botanicals
10 to 12 drops essential oil blend

Directions:

Arrange botanicals and sprinkle with oil. Refresh as needed.

Create a more complete, natural and toxic-free signature home style by considering the importance of aroma in your home environment. The process of enhancing your home with a one-of-a-kind scent is no less important than selecting the furnishings in your rooms or the finish on your walls and woodwork. Pure essential oils are the natural building blocks of your personal aromatic style and a safer, more unique alternative to products containing chemical fragrance. For more information about using essential oils in your home, visit www.auracacia.com.

New Facebook game rewards winner with real gold (Yahoo! News)

The Great American Express Gold Rush will pay out solid gold to the lucky grand prize winner

Games like World of Warcraft encourage players to obtain as much fictional gold currency as possible, but games that pay out actual gold are much harder to come by. A new Facebook venture by America Express does just that, and one lucky grand prize winner will score over $15,000 worth of solid gold bullion. It's called The Great American Express Gold Rush and it is running from now until August 5.

The game is based on trading virtual gold between various world territories. You must jet around the globe and compare gold rates to find the best bargains. Raising money through your deals will inch you ever closer to the top of the leaderboards. Whoever has secured the most profit when the competition is over will be declared the winner, laying claim a treasure trove of actual gold.

American Express has organized this ambitious competition in order to drum up some awareness of its new Preferred Rewards Gold Card, which, if you don't happen to win the big prize, might allow you a bit of a shopping spree to soften the blow. Currently, while the game can be played by anyone with a Facebook account, only residents of the U.K. are eligible to win prizes. American Express is also quick to point out that the market conditions used in the game aren't to be relied on for investment purposes, though we'd hope that bit of info is a no-brainer.
