I?ve learned some stunning news this year during PFT Live.? In May, I got word that Dick Ebersol was leaving NBC moments before an interview of Vikings V.P. of stadium wrangling Lester Bagley.? I managed to cough up at least one complete sentence (I think) during the ensuing questioning.

Today, during an interview of Vikings beat writer Jeremy Fowler of the St. Paul Pioneer Press, I learned that Tom Kowalski of Mlive.com had died.? I trudged through the rest of the segment, largely numb to whatever Jeremy and I were discussing, and then I clumsily broke the news to Peter King during the next segment of the show.

The Lions honored the man who covered the team for 30 years on Monday, with coach Jim Schwartz not fielding the first question at his press conference, which Kowalski traditionally asked given his tenure covering the team.

?I got the word on the practice field awhile ago about Tom?s news,? Schwartz said. ?We just brought the team up and had a moment of silence and prayer.

?Obviously, our condolences go out to his friends and his family, of which we consider ourselves both here.?

?The entire Lions organization, the Ford family, and me, personally, were deeply saddened to learn of the passing of Tom Kowalski this morning,? Lions president Tom Lewand said.? ?Tom was a true professional, the consummate beat writer, somebody who brought a lot of tremendous information to our fans ? even in times of disagreement; we always had the utmost respect for his professionalism.?

Kicker Jason Hanson, who secured his 20th season with the team on Monday given the decision to cut Dave Rayner, knew Kowalski better than any other player.

?I have too many [memories],? Hanson said.? ?It is one of those things, just like with everybody, takes you by surprise.? It kind of knocks the wind out of you.? You don?t know what to say or think yet.? It is just amazing.? Of all the reporters, I think he was the one that got it right most of the time and really had the insight.

?Beyond that, regardless of any of that, he will be missed by all of us.? And everyone in this locker room, their condolences and their prayers and their thoughts go to his family and friends.? I am just at a loss of words.? I don?t know what to think.? We all are like ?Is it true??? We are devastated.?

I?d never met Tom, but we?d traded plenty of e-mails, and I think we talked on the phone at least once in the past 10 years.? Most recently, he helped me track down details of the report regarding an incident involving Braylon Edwards? entourage in Michigan, before news of the situation had made it onto the Internet.

Moving forward, whenever I think of the Lions, I?ll think of Tom Kowalski.? Plenty of other people surely will do the same.? And that?s probably exactly how he?d want to be remembered.

Wastewater recycling can multiply greenhouse gas emissions

ScienceDaily (Aug. 29, 2011) ? Despite evidence that some wastewater treatments multiply nitrous oxide emissions, researchers say planners need to look at the big picture.

New research shows that wastewater recycling processes may generate more greenhouse gases than traditional water-treatment processes. Despite this finding, there are good reasons to continue keep wastewater recycling among the water-resource tools for urban areas.

That's the summary of a new paper by Amy Townsend-Small, assistant professor of geology and geography at the University of Cincinnati, and a team of researchers from the University of California, Irvine. A report of their research appears in the September-October issue of the Journal of Environmental Quality.

"Advanced methods in wastewater treatment supplement fresh water supplies in areas where fresh water is scarce," Townsend-Small said. "Climate change, caused at least in part by humanmade greenhouse gas emissions, is expected to exacerbate freshwater scarcity in many of these areas, including the United States southwest."

Townsend-Small, along with Diane E. Pataki, Linda Y. Tseng, Cheng-Yao Tsai and Diego Rosso, studied how different types of wastewater treatment affect emissions of one greenhouse gas, nitrous oxide. Nitrous oxide (N2O) is a long-lived and potent greenhouse gas, with a warming potential of about 300 times that of carbon dioxide.

"Just like carbon dioxide, nitrous oxide concentrations are increasing due to human activities," Townsend-Small said. "Most of the increase in atmospheric nitrous oxide concentrations is due to the use of fertilizer in agriculture."

Nitrous oxide is a by-product of the metabolism of two different types of bacteria. One bacterial type, the nitrifying bacteria, convert forms of reduced nitrogen (like ammonium) to oxidized forms of nitrogen (like nitrates). Another type of bacteria, the denitrifying microbes, convert nitrates into inert nitrogen gas.

"The same microbes that live in agricultural soils also thrive in wastewater treatment and water recycling plants," Townsend-Small said. "The same nitrification and denitrification processes are employed in these plants to remove nitrogen from wastewater."

Townsend-Small and her colleagues compared the nitrous oxide emission rates at two different types of wastewater treatment plants in southern California. The first type was a conventional wastewater treatment plant, where the objective is to remove organic carbon and return the treated wastewater to a river or the ocean. The second type was a wastewater recycling plant, where both organic carbon and nitrogen are removed, and the treated wastewater is used for irrigation of landscaping and urban greenspace.

"Wastewater reuse for irrigation, otherwise known as 'showers to flowers', potentially reduces overall freshwater consumption in southern California, which is threatened by dwindling supply and a growing population," Townsend-Small said.

However, she and her co-authors found that the wastewater recycling plant emitted about three times more nitrous oxide than the traditional treatment, when all factors are included. The researchers' data indicate that dense populations of nitrifying and denitrifying bacteria in the wastewater recycling plant were the cause of these high nitrous oxide emissions. They also did preliminary calculations on the impact of wastewater recycling plants on nitrous oxide emissions in southern California.

"Because the Los Angeles area is so heavily urbanized, our calculations indicate that nitrous oxide emissions from wastewater treatment and recycling are several orders of magnitude larger than agricultural nitrous oxide emissions in the region," Townsend-Small said.

Despite the production of nitrous oxide, the authors conclude that -- taken in context -- wastewater recycling is still a good idea.

"Wastewater recycling is an essential component of the urban water-resource portfolio, especially in the semi-arid, urban southwest," Townsend-Small said. "Because drinking water in southern California is imported over very long distances, it is responsible for large energy consumption and carbon-dioxide emission rates."

Southern California's thirst also affects the areas from which it draws its drinking water, mostly Arizona and northern California, and disrupts aquatic habitats. The authors propose that cities allow recycled wastewater to supplement drinking water supplies, not just irrigation water.

"If wastewater recycling can supplement drinking water resources and not just irrigation water for landscaping, then overall greenhouse gas emissions could be reduced, as could the potential for water scarcity in southern California and beyond." Townsend-Small said.

The research was supported by funding from the National Research Initiative of the US Department of Agriculture and the Urban Water Research Center at the University of California, Irvine.

Factors Before Birth Can Determine Child's Risk of Allergies: Study (HealthDay)

TUESDAY, Aug. 9 (HealthDay News) -- Key factors that affect a child's risk of developing allergies by age 2 include race, a mother's exposure to pets during pregnancy and the method of delivery, a new study suggests.

Researchers at Henry Ford Hospital in Detroit followed 1,187 newborns and measured levels of the antibody immunoglobulin E (IgE) in blood samples collected from the babies at birth, 6 months, 1 year and 2 years.

IgE is associated with the development of allergies and asthma; higher levels indicate increased risk.

The study found that IgE levels during infancy were 28 percent lower in children whose mothers were exposed to indoor pets during pregnancy (indoor prenatal pet exposure) compared to babies from pet-free homes.

IgE levels were 16 percent lower in infants who had indoor prenatal pet exposure and were born vaginally compared to infants who had indoor prenatal pet exposure and were delivered by cesarean section.

IgE levels were 33 percent lower in infants of European, Asian or Middle Eastern descent who had indoor prenatal pet exposure, compared to 10 percent lower in black infants with indoor prenatal pet exposure.

The study was published online Aug. 8 in the Journal of Allergy and Clinical Immunology.

"We believe having a broad, diverse exposure to a wide array of microbacteria at home and during the birthing process influences the development of a child's immune system," senior study author Christine Cole Johnson, chair of the Department of Public Health Sciences, said in a hospital news release.

The finding supports what's known as the hygiene hypothesis, a theory that early childhood exposure to infectious agents affects immune system development and the risk of allergies and asthma, she added.

A Department of Energy panel hopes new recommendations ? if implemented ? will restore the public's trust in hydraulic fracturing or "fracking" for natural gas.

In the last few years, fracking has brought new life to old gas fields around the country. Most of the increasing production comes from dense layers of shale deep underground. By pumping huge deep underground amounts of water, along with smaller amounts of chemicals and sand, drillers can force gas out of shale.

Due in part to fracking, the Energy Information Administration estimates the U.S. now has enough domestic natural gas to supply the country's needs for 100 years, based on 2010 consumption levels.

President Obama has declared natural gas key to the country's energy future. Burning natural gas produces fewer greenhouse gases emissions than coal and oil, and as a domestic source of energy its creating much needed new jobs. But as gas booms have popped up across the country reports of problems have also increased. Critics worry fracking may be polluting ground water.

Homeowners who live near the wells claim methane, and possibly toxic chemicals, are leaking into water supplies. These growing concerns prompted President Obama to call for a panel to examine how to make fracking cleaner.

John Deutch was picked to head the group. He's an MIT professor with a long history in politics and the energy industry. He says a lot is at stake because of growing calls to ban fracking.

"There's a very genuine possibility that the U.S. public will turn against the activity and then slow it, if not eliminate it," says Deutch.

To build trust in fracking, Deutch's panel concluded people need evidence that it's safe and constantly being improved. Here's the basic theory behind the panel's recommendations:

"Measurement, plus disclosure of that measurement," says Deutch, "And using the measurement to influence best engineering practices in the field to minimize environmental impact."

The panel says gas companies should measure things like the amount of methane in nearby water wells before drilling begins; then again after and make all that data public. That kind of comparison could show whether drilling is harming ground water.

Let's just create a culture where the companies are being forthcoming and telling the public exactly what they're doing.

The panel says drillers also should fully disclose the chemicals they use in fracking. The industry has resisted this citing concerns over trade secrets. But the panel says in its draft report there there is no economic or technical reason to prevent public disclosure.

"There is so much fear right now ? justifiable fear ? about what these companies are using," says Kate Sinding, senior attorney with the Natural Resources Defense Council. "Let's eliminate that as an issue. Let's just create a culture where the companies are being forthcoming and telling the public exactly what they're doing."

This is still a sensitive issue for industry leaders like Erik Milito, a director with the American Petroleum Institute

"Targeting one industry to disclose every single bit of information, publicly, on a web site and and not applying that same type of structure to any other industry, you have got to start asking yourself, 'What are we trying to achieve here?'" asks Milito.

He points out some companies already disclose the chemicals they use. But the DOE panel says more disclosure is needed to assure a skeptical public.

The panel also recommends tougher standards to make sure air and water are protected throughout the natural gas production process. It also calls for more federal research dollars to answer key environmental questions.

The panel will accept public comments on the draft report for the next week before the final version goes to Energy Secretary Stephen Chu and on to the President.

Meanwhile the panel hopes state and federal regulators and the industry will take their advice seriously, before calls to ban hydraulic fracturing grow even louder.
