LOUISVILLE, Ky. -- A Kentucky Marine will be honored in Washington, D.C., on Thursday with the military's highest honor.Dakota Meyer will receive the Medal of Honor at the White House.Meyer, 23, is credited with running through a firefight to find four servicemen in September 2009.?They were in an ambush. They couldn't get out. They were killed. It seemed there were so many rounds coming from everywhere, sounded like static over your head,? Meyer said.He saved the lives of 13 Marines and Army soldiers and 23 Afghan soldiers. Meyer is the first living Marine to receive the award for actions in Iraq or Afghanistan. "As a Marine, I didn't accomplish anything. I was motivated by the challenge to be a part of something bigger, be part of a team that worked together toward a common goal," Meyer said.Meyer said he still thinks about his experience.?All the time. Every day. Not a second goes by,? Meyer said.He left the military about a year ago after tours of duty in Iraq and Afghanistan. Meyer served with Marine Embedded Training Team 2-8, Regional Corps Advisory Command in Kunar Province, Afghanistan in support of Operation Enduring Freedom.The Green County native also announced a partnership with the Marine Corps Scholarship Foundation for the Children of Marines.
