I?m the type of person that would rather repair and refinish things than to throw them away and buy brand new. There are several reasons for this. First of all, there are many things that were made to last a long time back in the ?old days? whereas most of the things that are manufactured today are put together with a bare minimum of quality; there is a built in obsolescence in many items. The reasoning behind this is that the manufacturers want the consumer to have to keep throwing away things and buying new. That?s one of the reasons why the planet is started to suffocate in garbage ? we have turned into a throw-away-society. Not all of this is the manufacturer?s fault, though. People are becoming either too lazy or too busy to repair things! Even my own sister would rather throw away a perfectly good blouse just because it lost a button. She HAS the button, she just doesn?t want to bother to sew it back on! Unbelievable!
So when I went to visit my in-laws house and I hear them talking about buying some new patio furniture, I asked them what is wrong with their old patio furniture. Well, I hear their reasons ?it?s faded? or ?some of the hardware is missing? and I am the first one to claim ?dibs? on their old patio furniture. With the explosion of home improvement stores and hardware stores, I would think that I could find information on outdoor furniture repair and the replacement parts I would need to fix up anything that is broken or missing a piece. I have a neighbor that is into woodworking and has a great little woodworking shop behind his house that I am sure I could arrange to have him make any replacement parts that I might need if I could not find it in a store or catalog or online.
And Minwax makes some great stains and lacquers that can be used to refinish patio furniture and make them weather-resistant. And Krylon makes some great spray paint that you can use to spray on plastic patio furniture to make it look brand new as well.
