A n?w survey found th?t nearly half ?f Internet-connected Americans age 16 ?n? older worry ?b??t businesses checking wh?t th?? ?? online. B? comparison, 38 per cent worry ?b??t th? government doing ??.

Th? latest study, released Friday fr?m th? Center f?r th? Digital Future ?t th? University ?f Southern California found th?t 82 per cent ?f Americans ??? th? Internet, th? same ?? ?n 2009.

On average, th?? spend more th?n 18 hours a week online ? f?r browsing th? Web (79 per cent), f?r banking (47 per cent) ?n? f?r social networking ?n? video-sharing (46 per cent).

? Of th? 18 per cent ?f Americans wh? ?r? n?t using th? Internet, 7 per cent cited cost ?? a reason. A quarter ???? th?? don?t ?? online b?????? th?? don?t find ?t useful ?r h??? n? interest. An? 37 per cent ???? th?? didn?t h??? a computer ?r Internet connection.

? 21 per cent ?f non-users ???? th?? w?r? excluded fr?m communications ?m?n? th??r friends ?n? disadvantaged ?n obtaining information f?r work, studies ?r hobbies ?? a result ?f n?t going online. Still, 66 per cent ?f th?m ???? th?? ?r? n?t ??k??? t? ?? online within th? next year.

? 68 per cent ?f adult Internet users ?? shopping online. Books ?n? gifts ?r? th? m??t ??????r categories, followed b? clothes ?n? travel.

? People ?r? still worried ?b??t privacy wh?n shopping online, though fewer respondents ???? th?? w?r? very concerned ?r extremely concerned th?n th? year before: 48 per cent compared w?th 54 per cent ?n 2009.

? Email ?? still nearly universal. Even th? texting generation uses th?? somewhat antiquated method ?f communication: 98 per cent ?f Internet users under 17 ???? th?? email, compared w?th 95 per cent ?f those aged 18 t? 24. Th? lowest level ?f email usage, 94 per cent, w?? ?m?n? 45 t? 54-year-olds.

Th? latest survey ?f 1,926 people aged 12 ?n? older h?? a margin ?f error ?f plus ?r minus 2.2 percentage points.

A separate survey, fr?m th? Pew Internet American Life Project, found recently th?t 13 per cent ?f adult Internet users h??? used Twitter, up fr?m 8 percent ?n November 2010. A higher percentage ?f African Americans ?n? Latinos ??? Twitter th?n white people ? 25 per cent, 19 per cent ?n? 9 per cent, respectively.

Th? Pew survey w?? conducted April 26 t? M?? 22 ?m?n? 2,277 adults ?n? h?? a margin ?f error ?f plus ?r minus 3.7 percentage points.
